Hi all I've purchased an srad600 for £250 obviously needs some work but a nice project. Now I'm wondering before i start is it worth getting the owners manual. I've just purchased the haynes manual is it worth having them both Question

For you yes, you'll soon bin it and will need to work on it.

Out of interest why have you bought one?

You have often said you don't like anything that uses clip ons and that you want to fit ape hangers, I suspect you meant handlebars to any bike you own, a SRAD with handlebars won't work so the question remains.

Think you are confusing me with someone else I've never ridden a bike with clip ons before. The only bike I had ape hangers if you can call them that is my cg125.

This srad is cheap for a bike that runs and just needs general service, tidy up and new tyres. For the price it's worth it.

Needs as followed;
Both tyres
Clutch looking at (very hard)
Indicators looking at (one flashes on either side)
Chain and sprocket
Fork seal
Oil
Brake pads
Spark plugs
Fresh fuel.

I like the SRADs, they are pretty awesome.

But for 250 ponds.... the engine will need opening up.

No I'm not confusing you with anyone else it is something you have said several times and it was YOU who called the handle bars on the CG ape hangers, Teffers even comments on it on another thread.

I specifically remember you mentioning to me that you didn't like clip ons and I said you had never tried them. You went on to say that if you bought a GT750 that you would be removing the cast bars to fit apes.

Do you now have memory problems as you seem to have forgotten a lot that you have said to myself and others?

Needs as followed;
(£250-300) Both tyres
(£150ish) Clutch looking at (very hard)
(£????) Indicators looking at (one flashes on either side)
(£150) Chain and sprocket
(£20* ) Fork seal
(£20) Oil
(£60) Brake pads
(£20) Spark plugs
(£20) Fresh fuel.
All rough approximations, B-U-T, there is around, what, £600 worth of known service spares to tackle just those things you have noted as obviously needing attention; likely 3 or 4 times what you have paid for the bike, to make it properly road-able, and MOT worthy even if there genuinely are no major horrors lurking in there.... and the * Fork seal is an imediete alarm bell on a USD fork bike, that is NOT something easily DIY able like a conventional fork, and usually needs a specialist to strip.... THAT potentially could be a £300 pro-job, on its own....

But hey ho... what you are telling us is that you have bought a 'project-bike' that even if you can fix t up, will almost certainly cost you more than it is worth to do so, which... you probably cant even ride if done, because of your health issues, even before you smashed your legs in the last off, and were told you should not be riding by the quacks.. that you don't have a licence for... and cant 'blag' as restricted, 'cos original brochure specs are outside those that may be restricted for A2....

And you want to know whether we think buying an owners manual might be a good idea?!?

Did you bump your head REALLY hard in that last off Sammy? I think here may be a FEW slightly more important issues to consider here! But hey! If having the owners manual now you own the bike, helps you feel more complete.. carry on... it surely cant hurt much in the greater scheme of stuff!

Wasn't the issue with the Suzuki SRAD motors when introduced all related to head gaskets?

I can't remember back that far, but didn't they recall or issue a fix for them as the original head gasket had a reputation for blowing, and not only that they were sometimes too thin and let the pistons meet the valves?

So most high miles SRADs should have now been sorted?

Or do they have other known longevity issues?

Or are we just talking generally about well.thrashed high revving 90's sports bike engines being tired by now?

What year, what mileage, what condition, how many owners? Just curious.

The 600 runs conventional forks.

Other than that Mike, you are right. It's going to be a money pit and will probably need a rear shock adding to that list.

No it's not worth buying the owners manual.

You can probably download it from somewhere if you really want but it sounds like theres plenty of more important things to be doing.

Supposing Smiler wants a track day bike and not a cosmetically shiny ride to the pub bike though.

Then a £250 bike might start making sense. By the time your a couple of grand into it you could have a sorted track bike that wants for nothing? Also if there are some tidy clean panels and all the road gear and electrics are working, you could have reduced that spend by flogging it all off on eBay.

Starting with a tidy clean bike for a track day machine is a bit of a mistake if it's cost you a few quid, and you'd want to totally strip and re-build any bike chassis wise at least before using it on the track, (well I would anyway).

It probably is. Especially if it needs any kind of head work doing. The valve timing isn't quite what you expect.

If someone wants a track bike then it's cheaper to buy a sorted track bike than it is to buy a PoS which you then spend lots of money on.

Yes, the workshop manual would be much more useful than the owners manual. Wink

What is the difficult aspect of this task?

I'm new to motorbikes and have recently bought a bike with inverted forks. The forks aren't leaking but the dust seals look slightly perished so they're bound to be letting dirt past which will wear out the oil seals. I've watched a video showing how to do them and didn't notice any potential issues. What am I overlooking please?

I was on my phone last night so couldn't post any images not easily anyway. Save moving the bike I've only taken then from one side at the moment. The clocks on it are original by the way and trevor it has 3 other owners previous to me.

I purcashed it as it was my friends that I saw him using every day until he replaced it with a cheap 125 to commute on. Then it was left in the garden.

Teflon mike some of your figures are stupid by the way from ebay for example; the chain and sprocket will cost £80 not £150. The clutch cable is hard to pull in by my standards it does go in gear though and does turn over I know because my friend used the engine power to get it on the trailer.

Purchased the bike for a project and to try and test see how a sport bike would be on my wrist. Don't care about neat plastics heck look at my other bike. So far it's pretty comfy and feels nice; did ride it last year when my friend was using it daily on a private road.
