Ok so I bought my first big bike last month and it's the first bike I've had in over 20 years. Between being away at the weekends and working long days I've not yet had the chance to do anything to do it yet including washing it although I have done a very quick and probably rubbish clean and lube of the chain.

The question is what should I be doing and how often to keep the bike running smoothly conscious that I haven't so much as looked at a spark plug in 20 years.

What bike is it and when was the oil last changed? If you don't know, I'd get the oil, oil filter and maybe air filter and spark plugs (depending on condition) changed.

Chain tension is one a lot of people neglect, so check that. Maybe lubricating the throttle and clutch cables if they seem a bit dry.

If you don't know when the valve clearances were last done that's probably worth looking into getting done (probably not a job to be tackling alone to start with).

Read the owners manual (if you have one), buy a Haynes manual if one exists for your bike. Pumping the tyres and lubing the chain (assuming not shaft drive) is all you have to do in the short term. Check the oil level occasionally as well.

You bought (What bike?) last month, was it in use? If so, just maintain it to your capabilities. If not, do as above have suggested and then get a competent mechanic check it over. Watch and ask what he does and learn what you can do safely.

It's a 2012 Suzuki V-Strom 650. Wink

By the power of the internet, I give you the workshop / service manual for your bike: https://www.v-strom.co.uk/downloads.htm

Do you know a guy called Adam Aarons or a girl called Suzie Fuller?

Oh, well done Ste. (Coughtwatfucksmartarse).
Shouldn't need much doing apart from riding then.
