Can you mix different grades of oil in a bike.

My manual says I should put 15/40 or 15/10 in I don't know what oil is in there already as I haven't changed it since I bought t

Yes - and mixed oil is always better than low oil.

But the obvious answer is to just change it, so you know what's in there and how old it is. It's not big cash.

Did you mean 15w/40 or 10w/40? Those would be common grades of oil.

I can think of no significant issues which would come about from mixing brands or grades of oil providing they are listed as appropriate for your bike.

I do try to top-up my sportsbike with the same oil I filled with but I'm not aware of anything that would react oddly between modern engine oils. I just throw whatever is lying around in the enfield.

The only real (as opposed to fabricated by manufacturers) issue I've ever been aware of on mixing oils is if you mix a vegetable based oil with a mineral based one. Veg based oils are uncommon and expensive and usually for very specific applications. If you were in a position to be using one, you would know about it.

Oil doesn't need changing yet / isn't low and I just thought of it whilst reading book and just wanted to check

However bike was bought from family friend and I believe him when he said he had just had it changed backed up with paperwork

For what it costs, it's cheap peace of mind. Always factor in oil/filter when buying a bike, it's exceedingly rare that you *know* how they have been treated.
