I've always just used the cheapest semi synthetic 'car' oil on account of the fact that it was a tossup whether the exup would use more oil or petrol.

I bought it 5 litres at a time at asda.

Never had a problem with the clutch.

I've had issues with clutch slip on some bikes, others have been fine.

I have car oil in at the moment until my delivery of Castrol 1 arrives, and it's not slipping, but it is a brand new (<50 miles) clutch. Put 20K on a clutch and it may well slip in car oil.

Some bikes will be fine, some will suffer clutch slip. You pays your money and takes your chance.

5l of Motul 5000 is only £25 delivered though so I'll be sticking with that.

I've been using that for a good few years, as we always have some kicking around at work.

Never had any problems with my clutches, or anything else.

I've been using semi synthetic for donkey's years, for the past year my
mechanic has been using Q8 semi, never had any real clutch issues.

i`ve been usin castrol GTX for years .. from asda and later from Euro parts .. its just the price has crept up to over £20 for 4 liters and frankly i don`t think its worth the money now ... the spec on this TRIPLE QX is exactly the same and with their promotion £12-13 for 5 liters .. given i`m gonna need three containers of the stuff its quite a saving..

was just hopin some one had already used the stuff with out any problems.... and it appears it is so .. Thumbs Up

Wow, we haven't had a "car oil in my bike" thread for at least 6 months, was getting withdrawal symptoms...

My Penny Coin - Bike manufacturers recommend JASO MA spec oils for a reason. The cost of that over a cheap non JASO car oil is only a few quid so why bother?

Is that stuff still doing the rounds? I remember thehoo-ha when that came out. The stuff that coats non stick frying pans in liquid form in your engine. Will reduce friction etc.etc. Rolling Eyes

I remember wanting to try it but not wanting to risk my FJ1200. I obviously wasn't totally gullible back then. Laughing

if you want that discussion its been done to death on various threads on here ... just want to know if anyone has used this specific car oil and if there was any problems ... it would appear it has been used without problem....

If you're after cheap oil I am currently running Vetech 10w-40 in my TRX with no adverse effects other than increased oil consumption because it's stupidly thin (as all bargain basement oil seems to be). GSF often offer big discounts through coupons (as do Euro Car Parts, well worth a check) and you can currently get 56% off with the code PAY56 - this makes a 20L tub only £34.85.

I must concede that the feel of the gearbox is not great but then it is never great on a TRX so I can live with it, just as I can keep topping it up. No regrets until the crank shells pick up.. Laughing

EDIT: ECP are also offering a decent coupon, SPOOKY80, cuts the cost of that QX stuff from £20.49 to £12.29. Not as cheap as GSF but still cheap. Both are own brands and a bit rubbish though, QX gear oil is certainly thinner than I'd like.

I actually have a 5L bottle of this Triple QX Semi Synth stuff in the (cold!) garage, so I went and gave it a slosh. Sure enough, it's really thin. If you're looking to cheap out you may as well get the Vetech from GSF, and maybe some ZDDP additive for peace of mind if you'll be using it long term. These are all SN/SL/whatever rated and they probably manage that by having hardly any additives in them - of course this will help keep the price down too.

I've tried Vetech, Westway (ebay), that cheap stuff from Home Bargains, some cheap bike oil from a Carrefour supermarket, Triple QX and they're all thin. Not as thin as well worn oil, but much thinner than premium oils. No side effects yet, but I haven't run a bike on just the cheap stuff for very long - I bought the Vetech for the K100 and only used it in the TRX out of desperation. The K100 also absolutely drinks it by the way, but it'll do that with any modern oil.

Up to you, really. At this price you could change it twice as often and still be quids in.

Shell Helix HX7 can be had for £20 for 5L if that is any good to you?

On paper it looks quite ok*, a bit thicker than a typical motorcycle 10w40 too.

I'd run it. But have not.

* By that I mean:
API SN+CF ACEA A3/B4 (would qualify to be tested as JASO)
cSt@40 (mm2/s) = 96.31
cSt@100 (mm2/s) = 14.37
Viscosity Index = 154
Flash Point(c) = 246
HTHS = 3.6

ppm:
Boron = 80
Calcium = 3000
Phosphorus = 900
Zinc =1000

VW 505 + BMW LL01 Approved.

I've used that in my thundercat for 20k miles without issue and my gpz900 for the last 1000 (only done that many miles since buying it) Thumbs Up

Ive been getting them on the 36% off offers. Car parts 4less is cheaper with an offer or go through the partssaver ebay seller

edit: actually 20k miles, not 15.

I buy it from Euro in 20 litre tubs, usually around £35 depending on the offer that is on.

I put it in my mighty 125 purely to see what would happen. It didn't fvck my clutch. Should I ask for my money back?

So the guy with the CBR600F that's done 300,000 miles and climbing reckons that he uses diesel truck oil.

The JASO MA specs appear to be from 2006. 2/3rs of my fleet have engines designed before that.

The Nazi Tractor specifies API SG / SH or JASO MA.

Mmmm, oil thread. Drooling

JASO was introduced in 1998 to classify against lower viscosity and friction modifiers, and revised 2002, 2006 and 2011. That's why we have JASO, MA, MA1 and MA2. Most 4T bike oils are MA2 nowadays.

All my older Kawasakis (late 90s/early Y2Kish) have recommended it in the manual.

I use 20w-50 diesel mineral engine oil in the enfield due to its high detergent content, it's a sooty engine.

I use Automatic transmission fluid in the primary drive. The clutch does not slip.

I use Halfords own brand 10w-40 car oil in the VFR750 which specifies SG grade.
