Inner Tubes

Does anyone have any idea what size inner tube would fit a wheel with a "150/70 ZR 17" tyre on it? I have no idea what these silly numbers and letters mean.

Also, does anybody know of a place online that sells them, as my local motorbike place doesn't and I don't really want to travel the country with a nail in my tyre to get one.

Try some of the tyre fitting places down your way, they should be able to repair it, but if they can't, then they'll probably have tubes to fit, or at least can get a hold of one pretty sharpish

you will struggle to get a tyre place to put tube in nowdays, especially on a Z rated tyre. If the hole is in the tread you should be able to get it patched, if its in the sidewall its new tyre time I`m afraid . The rules about what (and where) tyres can be patched are online somewhere but I cant be arsed to look.

The tyre can't be plugged as it has been done before.

I do not have the money for a new rear tyre, hence me wanting the size of inner tube I will need, as I will buy one and fit it myself, I refuse to pay someone to do something as simple as fit an inner tube.

Z rated tyres mean that you can go up to and over 150mph on them. The numbers represent the maximum recommended speed on the tyres so it's pointless to put Z rated tyres on a scoot for instance as it wouldn't warm up in time and will just have very poor properties for that vehicle.

Bike usually has a tyre article so:

max speed (mph)

J=62
K = 68
L = 75
M = 81
N = 87
P = 93
Q = 99
R = 106
S = 112
T = 118
U = 125
H = 130
V= 149
Z= >150

So basically, the Z on the tyre is the max speed rating if that helps

the letter is the speed rating of the tyre, Z IIRC is over 120 mph, tubes are not allowed because they overheat in tubeless tyres and can fail catastrophically. I`m impressed if you can change a 150 section tyre with the wheel still on the bike, how do you break the bead (without fucking the rim)?

Two very very long and fairly wide tyre levers, a couple of people who don't mind their fingers getting traped between the tyre and the rim, and bob's your uncle.

Hasn't damaged the rim yet, least not any visible damage.

I would advise against doing this. The reason being that a tubeless tyre has ribs inside it which can shred an inner tube.
It'd be better to find a dodgey tyre repair place & get a 2nd plug repair carried out if you're too skint to buy a new one.

If the hole is in a different place to where the current plug is, then a second plug will be fine. I currently have three seperate plugs in the back of the Blackbird (until the new Avon's are fitted on saturday) and so far I have done about 8,000 miles on the three plugs without any problem.

If you fit a tube to a tubeless tyre, then the chances of the tube overheating and letting go big time are enormous. You don't usually get instant deflation with a tubeless tyre, but believe me it will be more than your tyre that will deflate if the tube lets go.

As far as the markings are concerned, and to give you an example, 180/50/ZR/17

180 is the width of the tyre in millimeters.
50 is the height of the tyre wall in millimeters
Z is the speed rating in this case it is safe to exceed 150
R means that it is a radial fitment
17 is the size of the wheel but is in inches for some reason.
