Over the last two days I’ve started to feel a little dampness penetrating my previously watertight alpine stars textile suit. The damn things are also filthy after riding through all but 6 days of the winter.

Question is , is there anywhere in London or Essex where I can get the textile jacket and trousers cleaned and re waterproofed and any idea of the cost.

Many thanks.

My Alpinestars Andes textiles have never been 100% waterproof Sad

10/10 would not recommend.

The general advice seems to suggest washing textiles with Nikwax Tech Wash, and then re-waterproofing them with Nikwax TX.Direct Wash-In. You can pick up a twin-pack with a litre of both products in it for about £10.

Although, having said that, I've used both of them a few times, followed by a metric fvckton of TX.Direct Spray-On, and I can't honestly say it made a noticeable difference Sad

Interested in hearing what others have to say, but I suspect the best solution is simply "all Gore-Tex everything".

two days of riding at speed through walls of spray from cars and trucks leads me to accept its a losing battle to try and keep dry.

People reckon that the actual presence of dirt and clogging of the fibres causes water leakage (regardless of the waterproofer used)

Nikwax tech was and then the wash in stuff in the washing machine. you do have to follow the instructions to the letter and clean the soap drawer etc.
I do my hein gericke jacket every year with it and it stays waterproof having ridden through some torrential downpours here in scotland on a naked bike

I wonder how well it would re-waterproof your jacket if/when it eventually starts to leak Thinking

It doesn't work for me. I'm buying Rukka next time Folded arms

Also available - Fabsil gold. Had decent results with both, and I also use the Fabsil on tents etc.

As above Nikwax tech wash. Definitely clean the soap drawer and was at max 30 degrees. Then do a second wash using the Nikwax water proofing stuff. DO NOT tumble dry.

Any thermal liners can be washed normally

Not necessarily correct. Some of the proofers work better with a low tumble dry, just check the label in the jacket/trousers.

All that, then when it still leaks, eBay or bin it and buy a new or used Gore Textm lined jacket.

I reproofed my textiles with this stuff a few years ago, I did keep the water at bay for an hour or so in torrential rain but eventually it does let through. I now wear waterproof overleggings over the trousers so that the crotch says dry.

The textiles need to go this year due to weight loss and age and will be looking for something better.

Nikwax is pretty good, I use it on my waterproof walking jacket reasonably regularly and it hasn't let me down yet. Follow the instructions carefully and do both washes; one gets it clean and the other re-waterproofs it.

Waterproofs are waterproof,if they're not no amount of nikwax or any other product that reinstates the DWR coating will make them, nikwax just makes the surface bead water off so the fabric is still breathable.

I've never found anything waterproof once subjected to winter rain at motorway speeds.

Thumbs Up
I use "textiles" but expect them to be shower proof only. A cheap PVC two-piece oversuit for occasions when it pisses down does the job perfectly.

P.S. Goretex and similar "breathable fabrics" are over-rated, it's all marketing. Pass the popcorn

Which GORE-TEX® gear did you use that leaked, even after following their washing instructions?

I bought some of Scotchguard in September 17.

It has just about stopped working now after 6 months but it did a great job on my 10 year old Goretex. It gave back the repellency which washing with Nikwax never seems too.

I had a problem where after treating with Nickwax I would not get wet as the Goretex was working but my coat would take and age to dry out, longer than the time I was at work. After many a day of smelling like wet dog I was glad to find a solution.

Saying that I did try it on some of the mini me's sprayproof coats and it seem to do diddly squat so ymmv.
