I've been commuting on the M25 for the last few weeks.

Whats the deal with Variable speed limits.
not everyone seems to pay attention to them.

Are they enforced camera wise ?

From what I've heard on other forums etc (by no means accurate at all)

The cameras mounted on the side of the gantry (HADECS 3) are live all the time but no reports of them issuing NIP below 79 mph. (indicated ~ 85mph on a speedo I would guess)

General consensus is no one seems to really know... Neutral

My understanding is the cameras are only active when the speed restriction is in force. If it's NSL, home office guidelines prevent the use of fixed speed cameras.

Last time I was on the M25 (couple of years ago) there were gatso type speed cameras on the back of some of the overhead gantrys, you could see ruler markings on the road and the gantrys were either camera equipped or not.

People were ignoring the limits until they got to a camera equipped gantry then braking hard to go through it and accelerating again. Which obviously makes motorway travel much safer. Rolling Eyes Same setup on the M40.

Might have changed since then though?

my concern is mainly to do with when i'm managing to go along at 60 mph and then a gantry sign drops to 50 or 40 and no one seems to give a shit.

if i get a bit of empty road i tend to stick close to indicated 70mph.
if i need to get past an idiot then i might blip to 80-85mph but only to pass.

I'm not ton up for hundreds of miles.

Far as i know, all the 'Smart' Motorways are now doing speed enforcing whether at NSL OR one of the lower temporary indicated limits.

Particularly the M25 and the new Smart monitored parts of the M1 as you go North.

I live nearby jct 2 on the M25 and whenever the speed restrictions are in place both the overhead and side cameras do flash, I don't know whether those flashes result in points and fines but I personally won't risk it. I don't know of anyone who has been flashed there either but the rumors are that the smart motorways sections have been resulting in NIPs.

There are plenty of other roads to get a shift on if you want to go fast.

They flash without speed enforcement too. They've installed some on the M20 too... I love seeing people flying past and causing flashes
