The nuts and washers that hold the exhaust headers on my T100 Bonnie have rusted, due to me riding through the winter and not begin able to find anything that could protect them: ACF and the like burned off.

My best idea so far is to replace with A4 stainless, doubling the nuts up to protect the studs.

What can go wrong?

Would I be better using brass rather than stainless?

Thanks in advance.

Either A2 (304) or A4 (316) stainless will be fine. 316 is marine grade but I doubt you are going in salt water.

Plenty of copperslip. Will last a lifetime.

Damn. I didn't think of copperslip Embarassed

And yes, salt water is the problem -- wet roads after morning frost!

Thanks.

Nut, then if you have exposed threads, add a dome nut.

I'd use brass. Then if it seizes, you can just horse it off.

Be careful using SS. It has 'issues' that should be understood.

I think SS should have nickle based antiseize. Molycoat will work too

Nut on Nut is not the best locking method.

Why not go all O.E.M. ?

This site has some good info on fastening stuff.

You can trust this one. It could keep the Space Shuttle Zost on. Smile

Edit: Copper and SS suffer from electrical/galvanic corrosion.

Consider brass disposable, you will need to replace next time.

Stainless will never come off the studs, but if the studs themselves are coppa sliped they should come out easy enough. I did that last time. Ridden yead round since 2012 I was suprised how easy theh come out.

However, if you do not need to, exhaust is best undisturbed.

On aircraft we use silver plated steel nuts, never an issue.

I use brass on stainless studs, slathered in copper grease.

After 4 years of year round commuting both the studs and the nuts were free to undo.
