Following on from the various counter steering topics - here and here I wondered which method people prefered.

For myself I've found I'm a push person. It's probably easier for me to remember Rolling Eyes - right bend, push right bar Very Happy

What do you use, and why is it right for you?

I simply don't worry about thinking about it.

If I sat here and thought how I stand the bike up quick I would say I both push and pull at the same time... after all i have two hands.

Depends, if I'm riding one handed (right hand) then it's push for a right, and pull for a left. Razz

But normally both push and pull together.

I go with shaggy there, however I had to seriously look into this whole counter steering lark when I nearly ditched my bike through a hedge while on the DAS.

I've got a trike you see and when I relaxed one day on the bike I automatically tried to ride it as I do my trike, hence I nearly went left off a right bend.

I have to say, naturally as a newb to bikes, having never thought of counter steering before, I found I was naturally pushing on the handlebars.

If you think about it too much, you'll end up on that oncoming volvo bonnet Very Happy Very Happy as i nearly discovered. As mentioned it the other threads, it comes naturally and instinctively. You don't neccessarily think "umm, how should i balance my bike?" after being able to ride a bicycle for the first time. At first you "might" ponder how, but after a while, it becomes second nature, kinda like countersteering Wink Wink . I definately feel quicker around a corner when i "know" that i'm countersteering.

While it comes naturaly, you can make it work for you much more if you think about it.

At Silverstone, going on to the Hanger straight, I found my self pulling the outside bar... but my body/weight was to the inside, so probably couldn't push so well as such.

When I think about it, I push. Usually I just do it without thinking.

I push to turn into the bend and the pull hard to pick the bike up out of the bend.

There is alot more to cornering than just counter steering. Your body weight is a good third of the weight of your bike, so body postion can make a massive difference. If you shift your weight on the bike and stick your leg out (as they do on tv) you will find that you are 'pulled' into a bend due to air resistance that your leg creates. This also helps you take bends more smoothly.

If you think about it then it doesn't work! You just do it without thinking about it!

Yes, it does. It works much more effectively.
Next time you come to a corner, push/pull on the appropriate bars hard and see what happens; you will probably end up in the nearside hedgerow though Smile.

Counter steering can be used to change speed very fast.

The only time i actually think about counter steering is when i'm travelling at speed. On tracks i'll use it alot to turn hard at speed but on the roads i rarely think about.
