Im hoping you can help me out. I've got a '78 gs550E and since I bought the bike it has had a misfire on cylinder three. I figured I might as well go through the carbs to get an idea of what shape they're in. So far everything looks good in them except for what I believe is the fuel adjustment screw that can be adjusted in the front of the float bowl. Two of these screw are pointed and I have two that seem to be dull or snapped off. I will attach a picture for you to see. I am having trouble locating this screw anywhere and was hoping someone could guide me in the right direction. Every website that has the carb diagram does not list nor show this screw.

Are you talking these screws?

Usually with a coil spring.

Thanks for the quick reply! Those do in fact look like what i'm trying to find. Of course they are out of country and $60 lol. There are Carb rebuild kits on ebay for $16 a piece if you buy four and they are pictured but in the description they are not listed. Currently waiting to hear back from two different sellers to see if they are included in the kits.

Those are the idle mixture screws. I once had a fazer which had all four snapped off. Some goon has screwed them down hard and wedged the tips in the tiny drill hole, then backed them out leaving the tips broken and blocking the hole. Thankfully they poked through enough to tap them back loose so they would drop out.

Make sure you can see daylight through the holes on the broken ones. Also, don't use copaslip on them when you fit them if you ever expect to get them out again. Normal grease is fine.

I was that goon - on my XJ550/598 I forgot the spring when reassembling one of the carbs, as a consequence the needle was able to be screwed right down into its recess and sure enough the tip broke off on removal.. but without enough to poke through - ended up abandoning that carb as I would have needed a sub 1mm drill bit to remove it.

You might do better just to find a spare rack of carbs for the bits you need.
