I dunno if there are any of our 'murican cousins on this forum but what's the deal with export declarations from the USA?

Pretty much anything I get for less than 100 eurodollarpounds from China is marked down as a gift or low value item, goes through the post and the excise men are rarely bothered.

Anything I get from the USA (and Korea too, TBH) is scrupulously declared to the precise cent value even if it's only a dollar over the threshold for gifts etc. and really no one would be worried if it was marked down a bit.

Why the pathological honesty when only the UK tax man sees the benefit?!

If they’re a company because they’re playing it straight?
Because they’ve nothing to gain or lose by being fair and honest?
I got bummed by HMRC for £250 for a pair of carbs from America. I also wondered if they couldn’t have sent them as a gift!

I've Noticed this with EBay purchases. The Chinese always lie about the value to avoid duty.

I suppose our Inland Revenue would stand zero chance of getting a Chinese seller to pay up.

Mis-declaring value of goods for customs export is a federal offence in the U.S. AFAIK. That's a huge risk for no gain for the exporter.

A few years ago a friend sent me a Christmas present (I thought that would be classed as a gift personally), she had put the value of all the items at $200, I had to pay something like £67 import tax

Or another example, I just bought an outfit that was supposed to be from a UK seller, turns out it was posted from Pakistan and was listed as samples at a value of $15, I wanted to return it and was told to pay the postage myself and lie about the contents.... in the end I questioned why he was listed as a UK seller, why I couldn't just send it back to the UK address listed on his account.... he gave me a full refund and told me to keep the stuff too (most of which was too big or badly made, so completely useless to me).
