so picked up this toy box at the charity shop for all of 25 notes...
i have given it a clean and wax, but I'm unsure as to what to do with the lettering.

i was thinking of some type of acrylic which can be coloured and poured into the recess to set hard.

but i wouldn't know what to get......

any advice ?

I've seen a few youtubes on using coloured epoxy on table tops, or if your're feeling fancy you could melt pewter into it (I have no idea how expensive that might be).

Paint-on single part red laquer. I've got a tin of it somewhere, can't remember what make.

You've waxed it? Will the wax have got into the lettering (not bloody Briwax)?

Beeswax with a slight tint.
its not likely to have got into the letters which has been cleaned.

My wife loves all this sh*te Smile She tends to go with rough whitewash - that "shabby-chic" look.

Nope. Was probably Japlac, which does not seem to be available. Perhaps use Miranol if you can find it, or some other high gloss enamel. Maybe just (solvent based) high gloss alkyd paint like Dulux trade.

Ah. Humbrol enamel (solvent based!).

https://www.humbrol.com/uk-en/shop/paints/enamel-paints.html

Coverage said to be 0.3sqm per 14ml. About £2/tin. Loads of different gloss colours.

I've filled similar with gel-coat before which turned out really nicely and comes in every colour under the sun. Never tried gel-coat on wood mind.

I don't see why it wouldn't work on wood though.

Copper leaf is cheaper and a good place to start Very Happy

I'd be seriously tempted to either copper leaf it or look at inlaying it with something interesting like kirinite.

The copper leaf would contrast better with the colour of the wood.

Copper or gold leaf will be picked out by small fingernails in no-time flat.

Coloured wood dye then wax? Keeps it wood then and a very robust/repairable finish.

Filling with clear, colured epoxy (+ or - sparkles) would be awesome but I think you'd need to fill it proud them sand it back down level and polish to get it to look good. Probably wouldn't play well with the wax finish.

If you did epoxy fill, You could roll a couple of filler coats of clear epoxy over the top, flat it down then yacht varnish for a super-durable, mirror-gloss finish.

These guys supply lots of coatings. they do resin dyes too. https://www.ecfibreglasssupplies.co.uk/

This varnish is second to none. https://www.epifanes.nl/uk/the-epifanes-range-of-paints-amp-varnishes/yachting You can apply it with a cloth.

Seems a lot of faff though.

The gelcoat idea has merits but don't use actual gelcoat. it's designed to apply to the inside of a mould before you apply fibreglass. It';s flowcoat you'd be lookng for.

If you do use epoxy or resin, seal the wood first or you could get air bubbles from the wood fibres into it.
I think epoxy once cured is less toxic for the little uns to lick and chew on and it can come in range attractive colours

Allow it to acclimatise to somewhere warm, then move it somewhere cooler (but still in the epoxies thermal range) and apply the epoxy. Any microbubbles will contract and draw the epoxy back into the wood.

I have some experience with epoxy on wood. I made this.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/oimH7o1PwTfSRdppXE7I4m8tib5p3B-dlgDe8J7zrxAtI0fFenszEGyJjlubE0_Kl28dwuW3QFH3LsBMr6D1MvxqCI17PgSRKMRHhGxu1DfrvJ_ZtEPduwqSHp8X6CJ-yOieXfZ6oQ=w1155-h866-no

If you do decide to do it, long sleeves and nitrile gloves. Uncured epoxy on your skin can do nasty things.

Damn.
That was not the sort of toys I had in mind for such a venture.
I was going to suggest upholstering it in black leatherette with bronze humbrol (do they even do rose gold humbrol????? Laughing )
