Hi, I have a vivacity with some problems. It won't start and I can't figure out why. What I have done:
- Checked the spark, it is good.
- Used motorstarter inside the spark plug hole: starts, but stops after a few secounds.
- Disconnected the fuel hose to the carburetor: when I crank the engine, gasoline flows.
- Checked the compression: 150psi.
- Checked for bad air hoses: only found 1 hose, looked in good condition.
- Cleaned the carburetor, and replaced it with one from a 2005 vivacity: nothing happend.
- Replaced the engine with one from 2005: had one laying around, did not change anything, still same problems.
- Sprayed some water around the carburetor area to see if the engine rews, nothing happens.
- Checked the autochoke, get's a reading of around 50ohms or more, don't quite remembe - at least not an open circuit.
- I have mostly only tested by using the kickstart, but most recently I fixed the electric starter so I try with that aswell: nothing.. (and ofc I pull the brake lever).
- I have sucked the vacuum hose for the control valve: gasoline flows.

Anything more I can try?

Did you try using the starter spray in the air intake to test if the engine sucks it in and starts?

Clean the plug and try and start it. Take the plug out. Is it wet with fuel?

You've changed the whole engine? Did that include the carburetor?

No, I haven't tried that yet! Will do it once I'm back for easter break.

Forgot to say, it's a new plug. The plug is not very wet at all, even though I have tried to start it 50x times.

Sounds carb related. When you said you cleaned it, what did this involve?

Did you remove all jets and check they were clear? Some only have a pin sized hole and block very easily. Can you see daylight through them?

Taking it apart and cleaning using gasoline. Yes I did, and I could see daylight through them.

Yes, from the used motor. So it was a used, non cleaned carb. But I also cleaned the first one and tested with it beforehand.

If the plug's not very wet after 50 goes then fuel isn't getting through.

This should be all points on that chain:

Fuel cap (air inlet to stop vaccum lock)
Petcock filter(s)
Petcock tap (vacuum tap in your case, when testing is it a good flow or just a dribble?)
Fuel pipe to carb (ties in with above test)
Carb inlet to float valve (decent carb cleaner spray with one of those pipe attachments, make sure it squirts all the way through*)
Float valve (rubber bit at the top could perish, might not be sliding in and out smoothly**)
Floats (the ones that ride up and down on shafts*** can get stuck, throw floats into a jug of water, check they actually float)
Float/valve arm (is this moving smoothly)
Pilot/idle jet blocked (main source of fuel for starting)

The above plus a can of "Start ya bastard" should be all you need to get something out of it. Obviously a working choke would be a help but a choke's no use without the above working.

**well, that's what she said

Going back to that, have you checked after trying to start the thing that there is actually a sufficient quantity of petrol in the carb? You're sucking the hose, and it's OK then, but is there enough suck when you're trying to start the engine? You could bypass the petrol cock, and just connect up a tube from a squeezy bottle or something with petrol in it.
