YBR 125 Custom front brake freeplay

Doing a few last bits to this before I sell it now I have some time on my hands.

Front brake is pretty flappy. Have to pull it back a long way to get it to engage. Had a new disc and pads at the last MOT. Brake fluid looks pretty fresh although is filled up quite far beyond the line. Tried tying the brake lever back overnight to get rid of any air in the system but didn't any difference.

Any ideas how I can get it to sharpen up?

If bleeding it doesnt solve the problem your master seaks are fucked.

How many miles have you done on the new disk/pads?

Cool will try that first. Master cylinder looks quite fiddly.

Hi all,

Just bled this front brake and the fluid leaked out of the seal that sits just before bleed nipple.

Pumped some fluid through nonetheless but as expected it's the same as before. I guess this would point to the seals on the caliper needing replacing right?

Half the fluid came out the bleed nipple, the other half seemed to leak out the base of it.

The bleed nipple is basically just a screw-in hollow needle valve. Have you bled brakes before? Here is a short video of an annoying person bleeding a front brake. He mentions the issue with "seepage" you are having.

Here's a pictire of a bleed nipple. You can see the hole where the brake fluid runs into the central hole of the nipple, and also the sloped seat of the needle valve.

Note: You should not do these things up very very tight. Nipping them up so that they don't leak and won't come loose is enough, lest you damage the seat that the nipple meets.

Yeah I've already watched that one actually! I cracked it about a quarter to half a turn and it still seeped everywhere.

Sounds like worn threads, you may have to use heavy grease or non setting silicone around that area so you have less chance of air going back in.
Also you may have to crack open and shut the banjo bolts a little whilst under pressure to release any trapped air.

Hmmmm. So basically the caliper is pretty knackered then? That sounds like a messy job that's got a pretty small chance of going right if I attempt it Mr. Green

Nope, non adjustable.

Brakes do work, just the lever needs to be pulled right in to do so. Perhaps even slightly worse since I mucked about with them yesterday.

Hose has probably never been replaced - it's a 2011 bike. As far as I'm aware the bolts are tight. There are no leaks or anything, just very spongy.

Just doubled checked and the calliper mechanism does start to move when the lever is engaged.

I'm selling it, so unless there's anything to indicate there's anything wrong with the hose I won't bother replacing it Smile

After sorting your nipple problem (ooo-errr!) maybe try a reverse flush. Then admit defeat and buy a new brake pipe.

Might get a new caliper for it then. Doesn't seem much point rebuilding it if the bleed nipple thread might be knackered.

Is there any way to check if the hose is knackered before replacing it?
