I searched but couldn't find an answer. I have bought a flip front helmet
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Leopard-LEO-838-Modular-Motorbike-Motorcycle/dp/B076ZZ8KBD
This is just to get me going while the shops are shut but might do as a spare for a lift.
Anyway, even with the chin strap tight, I can push the strap forward and off my chin and helmet then can be pulled off head... I never noticed this 15 years ago or so last time I wore one. Can others do this? It is well fitted and feels fine otherwise (ie very snug fit)

Thanks

Seen a few of these helmets, very cheap and feel flimsy. Wouldn't wear it if the strap doesnt secure it.

To be honest, as my last helmet was bought 20 years ago or more, this cheapo one feels just as good! I realise that it really isn;t though and will be getting a proper one when the shops reopen. But, the strap thing is odd. I'm not sure if they are all like this and I havn't noticed, i.e. can you all push a tight strap forward and off your chin???

My first thought was no, and it sounds like a design weakness but then I've never tried to push a closed chin strap off. Why would you? It's not an event that would happen in normal riding or even crashing unless the helmet moved first. Can you move the helmet significantly with the strap closed?

Still, £40 for a flip-front with internal visor? Unless economies of scale mean they're selling billions you can only be getting something with the protective abilities of a takeaway box.

Totally irrelevant unless you fall off. Try not to fall off.

If you wiggle and pull it about, can you get it off? What does the sewn-in label (letters/numbers in a circle and strings of letters/numbers) say on it?

Actually, a helmet coming off in crashes is not unknown, I've just read a recent report on a case, and so I was curious if it would come off with the strap done up. The helmet fits as it should.

Yes but even a perfectly fitted helmet can come off in a bad enough crash, you'd be surprised how wibbly your skull gets when you're being thrown around the place. Ever seen the Slow Mo football to the face vids?

Jimbo's point is that you're incredibly unlikely to have an accident where something pulls the strap over your chin in the way you can with your finger. Without touching the strap can you get the helmet off with it fastened?

My understanding is a helmet should be snug and fairly secure with the strap undone (i.e. a bit of head shaking and it should stay put). The strap should then ensure it can't be pulled off. Is the strap actually tight to your chin? I can't see how if it is it could possibly get over your chin, unless you have a very bevelled face.

Buy a proper helmet. If you could pay to un-crack your skull or un-damage your brain, I bet you'd be willing to pay a hell of a lot more than £40.

Two words - Marco Simoncelli

Even a properly fitted helmet can come off given enough force.

Thanks for the input but I think you're missing my pint. I agree with all you say, I just wondered (not being able to go to the shops and try) if your helmet straps can be pushed forward off your chins. Have a go! Very Happy

Yes but even a perfectly fitted helmet can come off in a bad enough crash

Yes, that's what I said. I just wondered if anyone elses helmet strap, when tight, can be pushed forward over the chin like I can?

Jimbo's point is that you're incredibly unlikely to have an accident where something pulls the strap over your chin in the way you can with your finger. Without touching the strap can you get the helmet off with it fastened?

True, I just woondered if my strap was normal. No, I canot get the helmet off, it is a good fit and secure if no fingers pushing on the strap.

Is the strap actually tight to your chin? I can't see how if it is it could possibly get over your chin, unless you have a very bevelled face.

Yes it is tight and no I have a fairly normal chin and face lol. I can push the strap forward off my chin. Can you?

Correct. But that's not possible at the moment.

yep, but I'm just wondering if the strap is insecure on mine.

Cheers all

Read the reviews, especially the longer lower-star ones. Note what you have is ECE R22.05 ONLY when the chinbar is closed and locked.

The cheapest reasonable flip-front one I can find is a G-Mac Axis which has a 4* "Sharp" rating (£55, so yes it's £15 more. EDIT: £43.83 eBay EDIT again but only X/S still you can look as well as I can!. Maybe consider sreturning the one you have and buying one of these?).

Thanks for that, very useful. I will be buying a decent helmet as soon as the shops open and will use your info on Sharp. I think having agood fit is very important, not least for comfort and not being distracted, and by luck the leopard one is, so for a few short pootles it'll do.

"it feels cheap because it was cheap. the sun visor doesn't cover enough of my face. needed a lot of WD40 to try to make it open/close smooth, still just half way there... etc"

this 1 star review made me laugh... who in their right mind does this and stinks their whole head of wd40 stench lol?! Brick Wall

I honestly don't think the helmet feels bad at all, but I can assure you my next one in a month or 2 will be a good make Thumbs Up

I wear a modular flip front pretty much all the time. Mine is a Caberg Trip, it has a SHARP 5* rating and cost the princely sum of £90.

I’d worry more about fit than a ‘good’ make. A well fitting secure ‘cheap’ lid will outperform the best Arai or Shoei ever made if it doesn’t fit properly.

Do you think it has something to do with the shape of your skull? Can you return it?

Oh well, will have to wait till the shops open and try a few of.
And no, I don;t have a deformed head. I think the strap is just too free to swivel about its anchor points so although it is tight you can push it forward off the chin. I didn;t notice till i'd unpacked and pulled all the stickers off so can;t return.
