so I'm booked in for the CBT and intend to go on and do the direct access immediately after, would you all recommend booking on for the theory test now, I understand there are delays etc and presumably bring a theory test i wouldn't need actual riding experience for it (been a driver for 30 years)?

Do Theory ASAP.
You need ~Theory/Haz-pep pass to book Mod tests; many schools wont even book you onto a DAS course unless you have haz-pass, cos they cant put you in for tests without it & lack of Theory/Haz can stall the whole process.

+ Talk to the school; you must do CBT before you take to the road; if you plan DAS, the school may bundle one on the course.

++ dont count on knowing bog all about riding bikes soc you have been driving an arm chair for decades. In fact, experience can be as negative as positive.

eg: I once had longstanding car driver struggle on CBT playground getting to grips with something that they had to balance. On the road went great guns as everything was familiar... until they had to stop for a T-Junction, and toppled over because they forgot they had to put thier foot down... amusingly chap was even reaching for the hand=brake he couldn't find at the time....

Its something 'new' like learning to fly a plane or wind-surf, dont expect ANY heads-up advantage from a box, keep an open mind and be prepared to 'Learn'... thats why you are going to school after all

+++ Theory/Hazard is oft the hardest bit for existing drivers. It didn't exist 30 odd years ago when you did your car tests; and its not quite the same as the 'old' highway code questions. There's a whole shed load of questions in there now on PC indoctrination, like why is using a tram more environmentally friendly, a chubk more on NHS cutbacks like how many chest compressions you should give a suspected heart atackvictimn, etc etc.

When the theory was first 'invented' it was demod on the instructors at the school and barely 1 in 4 could get a pass on it. Haz-pep is even worse, it's a computer game and even if you spot the haz, you will likely miss the allotted 'click' window, cos as exing car driver, you will completely miss the 'hazard' its just something you deal with twenty tines a journey, or you'll panic over and click to early and too often;

Do the mocks.. and keep dong them til you can get a pass 99 times out of 100.... then talk to schools and book a course.

Have a go at the online practice theory and hazard perception tests to see how you get on.

You want to get the theory test done ASAP, assuming you've got an understanding of how the road work and so on, it shouldn't be a problem. With the hazard perception test you'll probably want to play around with the practice tests so you understand what it is they're wanting you to do.

Basically, go for it. Thumbs Up

Thanks guys, yeah I meant through driving have an understanding the highway code, rules of the road etc, but i also do a lot of cycling so hopefully will have a bit of an advantage over a non road user ...just hope not to reach for the handbrake or keep using clutch for back brake 😀

Really looking forward to learning a new skill, that's exactly what it is 👌

Re online hazard perception test, are there any you'd recommend?

Hi,

I used the offical DVSA Theory Test app and The Driving Theory 4 in 1 app. Both these were really helpful containing both theory and hazard percerption tests. I worked my way through until i scored top marks in all sections and in really helped me. It will turn out that you don't know as much as you think you did ! The hazard perception tests practices are a must so you get to know when to click, first time i tried some out i scored absolutley terribly ! Using these apps made me really confident and when it came to it i finished my theory test in 16 minutes ( you are allowed 45) and got one question wrong and i scored over 90% in my hazard perception. Good luck !
