Getting sparks in the wrong place :O

So I've finally retrieved this family heirloom. Had it mot'd & started a couple of years ago & trying to get it started again now, does fire but doesn't run yet. Charged the battery and now I get a spark where the pos cable from battery connects to some other stuff, 50 amp fuse, black connector red connector and silvery can (capacitor type thing). So, bad insulation, obvious candidate (but doesn't look that bad) or faulty component?

Bros 650 grey import (obviously) declared manufactured 1989 (grey wheels) Will attempt to add relevant pics.

Any info/suggestions particularly welcome (except advice to get a decent bike haha).

That's the starter solenoid by the looks.

Before you do anything crazy, clean all the terminals and connectors! Everything has got to be clean and shiny, no green/white oxidation crap.

Ooh interesting, starter solenoid eh? engine turns over fine & the spark doesn't seem to make a difference. Thorough clean & tidy sounds like a good place to start tho & make sure all rubbers are in place properly & see what happens I'd noticed the rubbers may not have seated properly, curled edges etc & the one over the fuse was the wrong way round :O That's the job for tomorrow after work then

Awesome thanks guys, bit of a clean up (not too cruddy) remounted it all correctly with rubber covers in the right place and no more arching starts with power start and runs for a while if I keep blipping it up to 5k. Rather bizarrely will fire without but only once if I leave it for half hour. Gotta see if I can get some carb cleaner in. Don't want to remove carbs as they're a real pain to put back. Kudos for your responses, thanks
