Hi,

I need to replace the starter motor on my 2004 CBF500A.

I live in Australia and sometimes tracking down parts can be difficult like at the moment, I'm trying to avoid international shipping and long shipping times.

I was wondering if anyone knows if other motorbikes use the same starter motor as the CBF500 (mitsuba sm-13) such as a VTR1000.

Thanks,

Emma

As someone still getting good use from 40 year old starter motors
I'd like to know why you think need a 'new' one?

Most of them are quite serviceable in my experience
unless they've suffered serious wear or damage.

Yours may just need new brushes and a commutator clean up

And new little bronze bushes for the armature too.

I couldn't agree more though, I've had had the starter motors on two of my bikes re-conditioned like this, once by an auto electrical place (£45) and did the other myself.

It is the right age and price point to have knackered bushes in the starter.

Seems an odd place to save money, but not the first budget Honda from that sort of time that I've found or heard of worn out starter motor bushes. You can get pattern replacements on ebay.

Watch a youtube video on how to do the job before doing it. It's either really easy when you know how, or one of those jobs where you need 6 hands when you don't.

'Here's one we did earlier'
The rear bronze bush, front roller bearing and oil seal were all fine
so were the brushes so all it needed was a clean and tart up.

I checked and found that had any of the above items been badly worn
I could easily have sourced them for a few quid and brought it back to nearly new condition.
If the armature or commutator was fooked that's different
and probably beyond economical repair so a bin job.

Hi,

I pulled it apart with the hope of refurbing it but discovered that as a result of not being used for 2 years it was beyond repair in regards to the rubbers, bearings and brushes with the internal mechanisms being worn and damaged.

Hence the question about a replacement.

Thanks,

Emma

Hi,

No I don't.
Do you know if there are any other models that use the same part?

I think you will find the old 1990's type CB500 is the same and certainly here in UK they sold maney times more than the CBF500
but used basicly the same engine

Very un usual to see a starter that a commutator clean a set of brushes and some rubber grease on the bearing and o rings will not sort !
