Why does oxford make you wince?
Unfortunately that anchor is unavailable yet.. picked up an Abus 100 in the end, looks big enough to accommodate most chains...

Bennett's chain test dispelled that myth.

Isn't that the case for the vast majority of security chains? Is it the case for all Oxford chains?

*opens the can of worms* Laughing

Makes me wince because the first thing people see in shops like J&S or online at places like Sportsbikeshop is their 8/11 mm chains that are basically pointless. I've been there, and I'm glad I escaped without an attempt on them.

If I was going to spend a huge chunk of money on a 22 mm (at which point I'd have to ask myself if I was being paranoid, or if I actually needed it would a bike be worth the stress of owning) then it wouldn't be Oxford. Never touched it, so can't comment, but the brand to me isn't worth a penny.

Ironically the only product I'd touch of theirs is a cheap disc-lock because its convenient at times, but that accompanies a few other things at which point if they've surpassed then I've saved myself loosing more money.

So what have you got for out and about? If you've sunk a huge sum in a 22 mm for at home that's great, but that isn't going anywhere beside where its fixed to in a hurry. Presuming you commute.

Buy two bikes and chain them together, one providing an anchor for the other. Any excuse for two bikes.

I have a oxford chain and it is likely just as easy cut as any other. Titabium chain is the way to go.

Pragmassic or Almax chains.
Both supply their own ground anchors, locks etc.

I wouldn't use Oxfords chains either

Xena alarmed Disclocks for quick outside shop locks etc
anything more than 15 minutes chain to something sturdy or another bike

Oxford do make cheap crap chains and Locks. However they do make some better stuff that is Thatcham approved and a reasonable price.

TBH I don't see the point forking about for a really expensive chain. A Battery Grinder will still get through it. As long as it can't be cropped by reasonable croppers I'm, happy.

I have an had a few oxford chains over the years and most have been crap however they were also cheap AF. I have an oxford Hardcore XL which has served me well for 5 years.

I fitted a Pragmasis Torc ground anchor with the upgraded 22mm shackle.

What is the width of the chain link you are looking to use? I can measure it for you?

Personally with portable angle grinders I don't think it makes that much difference what chain you have as long as you have one. Yes, It will stop joy riders and most thieves won't bother unless you have a very desirable bike that attracts the professional.

I've seen a shipyard crack apart an anchor chain off an 80,000 tonne tanker in a few minutes. If you have the correct gear, it's like cutting butter.

Its all about slowing the thief down and also forcing him to make a lot of noise.
Giving us owners a chance to catch the bastards!

I have 2x 7 foot locking gates at side of house
a brick built garage with reinforced door and 3 locks
bike inside with 2x ground anchors and alarm
2x 19mm almax chains

All this is covered by 8 CCTV cameras and a ring doorbell.

Its not impossible to steal my bike, but its impossible to do it without alerting me and the dogs Twisted Evil

Is that not bordering on paranoia? If someone steals my bike then good luck to them. I hope the new owner does a high side and falls on his head. Thankfully we have insurance for such incidences of theft. How much does all that security knock of your insurance premium?

I just cover the disklock in dog shit just for some laughter after my bikes been nicked.

That's a STUPID idea. What do you chain the other bike to when you're out riding the first one? You need at least 3 bikes for this plan to work Wink Laughing

My policy only allows me to specify 2 security items, even though I use more Confused

Well the gates and CCTV form security for the house too.

Before i had that garage built, scroats attempted to steal my bikes several times... which is why i had the garage built.
Same as above, i can only put 2 security items.. ironically none of that lot is listed.
All i have on is a Xena alarmed disclock which is listed... insurance companies need to up their game. But then again, they aint going to do something to help you get cheaper insurance are they... they want our money!

to the OP
Get the best chain and lock you can afford, it will help you sleep a little better
If you haven't got an alarm dog, get a smart detection device that will ring your phone if someone is creeping about.

Layers of security are good.

As has been mentioned, the weak point is the chain, not the ground anchor. Even a basic, cheap ground anchor is a solid piece of 15mm steel. A grinder will get through it, but it is far easier (and still necessary unless you're really strong) to go through the chain.

If you do get a ground anchor, think carefully about fitting. You need to have it properly fitted to the floor - and if you're going into old, hard concrete it will take ages and probably wear through two expensive drill bits just to make the holes. You also need to have enough space around the anchor to squat down and thread the chain through it.

Consider what bikes you may have in the future - if your bike is short and you can only just close the garage door behind it, move the anchor in another couple of feet.

Finally, if you aren't going to spend the money on a really good chain, use a disclock instead of a chain and ground anchor. If it's inside a powered garage then I'm a big fan of nest CCTV. I can check on my bike without getting out of bed.
