Hi all. I’ve pulled out a xl250r from god knows where, I’ve cleaned out the carby and put it back in. I’ve come into a problem where it’s wanting to push fuel into the air filter. First time working with a carby. Anyone able to lead me in the right direction?

Possibly the inlet valve isnt seating properly if the bike is a 'barn find', is there much in the way of compression? With something that has stood for ages a good old spray of wd 40 down the inlet and exhaust ports will help the valves seal as the valve seats tend to go rusty and not seal if they have been open for ages. Valve could also be rusted open a little bit. Generally clears after extensive kicking.

Looks like the fuel is leaking through the idle air port. Remove and disassemble the carburetor. Check the float height and make sure the float needle is not stuck open. The location of your leak suggests that the float needle is stuck, overfilling the float bowl and leaking through the idle air port.

Be careful to shut off fuel to the carburetor until the problem is fixed, else fuel could pass into the cylinder, resulting in hydrostatic lock.

Is it a metal or plastic fuel tank. My XL250R used to feed rust particles through to the carb and make it overflow until I put a new fuel tap plus and inline fuel filter in after cleaning the carb for the umpteenth time.

Stuck float or knackered needle valve.
