Attempted/planned theft?

Got back from work very late last night (around 10pm), put bike on driveway, put chain and disc lock on and then the cover, and left it. I did not do up the clip on the under side of the cover.


This morning I came out to find that the cover was off the bike and lying in a heap just behind it. There's no way it could have come off by itself even without the clip done up!

I've been paranoid all day and tonight I've shifted enough of the crap in the garage to park it in there rather than the roadside driveway and attached every security device I have (including chaining it to a metal ladder).

Is this generally what thieves do, recce the local area's bikes before striking?

I'm currenly [finally] moving down to Bournemouth from Bristol. Bikes rarely ever there as it stands. Garage door stays up 90 percent of the time as its just my ex's car in the garage.

Last week I brought the bike down - parked in front of the car and put the garage door down. Usual alarm/disc alarm was on - didn't get triggered [would hear it below].

Came out the next day to find the [latched] door half up - someone had clearly been in to have a look around. Theres a lot of other garage blocks in the area and its not even a high-crime area, so in conclusion I would say the people after stuff are regularly checking - don't take anymore risks than you have to

Mines now garage-defender'ed up and has PIR alarms and alerts on it for when I bring the bike down permanently, but still, if they really want it it'll be gone.

I intend to make it as much hassle as possible though

Ground anchor, a big chain and make sure the garage is locked and you'll probably be ok

I regularly find my cover sitting under the rear wheel or off to the left of the bike due to the prevailing wind and where the catch points are on the bike ie. under the rear tyre, left mirror, front of bike.

Happens 100% of the time in high winds when the strap isnt secured.

Happens 0% of the time when the strap is secured.

Secure the strap in future and set your mind at ease!

I'm ultra paranoid I admit. Even without the clip it's on pretty securely attached though.

Currently bidding for almax chains on ebay and I ordered a fake CCTV camera from amazon It's got a red flashing LED to scare thieves away!

My bike lives behind a gate right outside a kitchen window, i've seen in even light winds the cover levitate off vertically! So don't rule out the wind.

Benno; I have a few fake ones as well as a functioning system.

Douse the inside with an anti corrode spray and fit a long life battery.
They don't like the damp.
Add a loop of cable to make it look more convincing !

A burglar will spot it is a dud straight off though it stops kids hanging about,

PIR spotlights rigged to a buzzer are very cheap and a better deterrent.

Semi pro thieves would have had the bike away. However the local scrotes do remove covers as I know. There was no way the cover could blow off my bike but it was off one morning, steering lock was broken too.
And I used mine daily too.

While reading this the wind did exactly this to my son's bike/cover. Lifted it right off the bike and plonked it down next to it quite neatly. I wouldn't have believed it either but I've checked the CCTV and my garden was scrote free.

I say it was the 99% the wind, found one of my covers down the bottom of the garden when I've not put the bottom strap on, even with it tucked under the chains and wheels.

They would have taken the cover I reckon if not the bike

What you need it a goose...

My bike got nicked from a locked garage with a disklock and chained to wall. they prized the disklock with a screwdriver and cut the chainlock with boltcutters, dont know how they got into my garage. i thought it was professional theives as they were well prepared, but no it turned out to be the local scum who stole it and were seen on CCTV pushing it about 5miles home through town!! The police didnt think to attend this CCTV image...?!?

My bike was recovered, when a local bobby was walking up a footpath leading to a field, looking into complaints of kids offroading, the police got onto the field, the lads bomb-burst and one shot down this alley, hitting the bobby. that got him nicked...

my bike came back, new oil, filters, exhaust can, carb settings and full tank of fuel, so it was in better nick then when the kids stole it in the first place!!
