Has anyone got experience of removing and refitting these clear plastic parts successfully. I want to get my engine covers powder coated , during the off season/lockdown, ready for 2021. Thanks.

I think they're just an oil seal with a plastic centre so getting them in and out is basically the same as doing an oil seal. If you have a look on youtube you should find videos of people replacing them.

What about if you realise you've run out of AA batteries and need to go to the nearest 24 petrol station to get some?

I recently replaced the sight glass on my 2002 BMW oilhead. The old one was plastic. "Heat a nail with a propane torch, melt through the plastic and simply pry out." So I was told. It took way more force to remove the old sight glass than I was led to believe; my slide hammer buggered it up more than it helped remove it. Unbeknownst to me, behind the sight glass backplate (left side) is an internal oil pipe. I'm lucky the prying force I applied did not damage it. Pried out the old part using a flat blade screwdriver and cleaned up the bore with a shop towel.
Installing the new sight glass was way easier than removing the old one. I used glass cleaner to lube the rubber seal, than tapped it into place with a plastic lead-shot hammer, using a socket as a driver.

The season when Steve the Grease falls off most.

I hope that helps?

Nah mate , can't get off the chair-- after 50 years of bikes , I don't fall off very often, although like stocks and shares past performance is no indicator of future behaviour.
