Hi Folks,

Quick question.

Would this fail an MOT?

Due to the exhaust I have fitted, the brake pedal is now quite low, and because of the screws in my ankle I find it hard to activate the rear brake with any heavy force.

This extension makes it much easier.

It's on securely and has no extraneous movement when operated, but I understand how dodgy it looks.

Do you reckon it will pass mot? And if not, what would you recommend I do?

[Edit: it's on a Royal Enfield 500 with a sidecar so its not as bad as you might think lol]

Best bet is to simply take it in for its MOT, and if it does fail, simply whip the extension off and let them re-test it there and then........ simples

Honestly, I don't know, but my gut feeling would be that 'yes' is a distinct possibility. Instead of the clamp arrangement, would it be possible to drill a hole through the pedal so that the shaft of the extension (threaded) passes through that, holding it rigidly in position by a nut? That would seem inherently more stable to me.

I suspect the answer will be subjective though, and could come down to whether the tester got laid the previous night. Could you not call by to book the test, and while you're there, just point at the brake and ask if it's going to be OK or not?

I'm in N.Ireland, so our MOTs are done at specific government run stations. It's a bit more regimented than in Britain.

If we fail an MOT we have to book a retest date online again, so you can have quite a wait to get something stupid checked again once it's fixed.

Seeing as you guys aren't 100% sure either I guess the best bet is I'll just take it off for the MOT, and it can't fail because of it.

I'll go with 'take it off' for the MOT too.
I see what you intend but can see possible design issues and would prefer something a bit more robust if I was tester and had to decide if it was fit for purpose or not.

Im inclined to think no. Not at all. Itll pass. The only way I can think it would fail is on a sharp edge in an accident point of view.

Have you considered a thumb brake as an alternative?

Why might it fail?

Assuming it's securely attached then everything should be good.

I think it needs some developing cos

It could work loose and spin ( blue arrows)
The clamp could rock off the pedal ( yellow arrows)
I'd prefer a more triangular bracing ( red lines)
not reliant on clamping on a single axis (white line)

Two through holes and a rubber block would be less prone to failure, but I see no ground for it not to pass the MOT.

There's room for improvement aesthetically but assuming it's secure and the brake still works properly, adapting the brake pedal so that his disability doesn't hinder his control of the bike isn't a reason to fail.

As it's going to be a permanent thing, I'd look at getting it welded up as that would help make a better first impression when the tester sets eyes on the bike.

If it's securely attached on the day and the brake stops the roller, it's all gravy.

This passed an MOT and you have to really stand on it to lock the brake because it's about 1/4 the length of the original one.:

Talk to your MOT tester The guy I use has Leg Issues and knows exactly what is OK and what is not
I prefer to see it bolted though but if it is secure I would expect him to be fine with it

I'd unclamp it, take it for the test, then put it back on again. As long as it works for the test how it should, then it will be fine.

If it's secure and the brake works properly then taking it off for the MOT and refitting it afterwards is a waste of time.

This.

With my tester's hat on, we aren't allowed to hit things with hammers or yah away on stuff with a pry bar anymore, so we can't test it to destruction, like they used to do in the bad/good old days.

I tend to test the brake light by pushing the pedal with my hand (we haven't got a mirror, so doing that allows me to either lean round and look, or put my other hand over the light) so if it felt insecure in any way under hand pressure, I might have a concern, but I don't think I could justify anything more than an advise and pass, unless it moved substantially.

In saying that, NI tests are a bit more draconian than mainland and it does look a bit temporary, so I would be working out a more permanent looking solution.

Were you on the bike when you did this?

OP Whip it off before the test.

Or, if you are on good terms with the test centre, ask them before the test.
If they are cagey and say you need to pay for a test first then take the beast somewhere else. (Finding a bike MOTer is a PItA)

Or.... Visit Timpsons and ask the cobbler to coble you a massive build-up under your boot. Like a Surgical Shoe.

I've taken it off lol. If it fails I would have to book a retest and that would mean not having the bike for another week or two. I will show the examiner a picture of it and see what he says, so I know for next time.
