Lacquer over polished aluminium

Hi All

Got a couple of jobs where I'm looking to ad some decals over polished ally then lacquer over the top. Solvol autosol leaves a residue so I'm proposing a wipe down with brake cleaner or acetone beforehand. does that sound OK?

I've used pure/99% IPA before on polished brass and it worked perfectly.

Pretty sure you can buy actual surface prep wipes specifically designed for the purpose, never looked but I'd bet they're IPA based anyway.

Aluminium needs an 'acid etch' (really) to ensure the paint doesn't slough off.

Normally the acid etch has a pigment to let you see where it is.
But the chemical is probably available as a clear coat.

Aluminium and alloy is normally overpainted after smoothing but acid etched before any primer is applied.
