Changing ignition battel on alarmed bike?

Hi all,

The ignition barrel on my ZX9R is fekd and getting worse. Sometimes I spend 3 to 4 minutes trying to get the key to turn so I thought it’s about time I sort it out before I end up stranded.

I’ve tried the Pencil carbon trick and sprayed plusgas down the barrel but it ain’t touching it.

I’ve bought a new ignition barrel and I’ve no problem about fitting it mechanically. The question I have is about whether my alarm system will allow be to just unplug the old barrel and plug the new one in.

My alarm system is a Datatool EVO 433. Currently it auto arms after 30 seconds of the ignition begin switched off so the bike won’t start and cannot be moved without the alarm going off so I suspect it is wired to the ignition somewhere.

I’ve done a barrel change on my GSXR K3 but that wasn’t alarmed so it was straight forward.

Has anyone else had this situation before?

Missed biking so now, Aug 2019 have a 1999 ZX9r. What a beauty she is too.

Crack on - you'll be fine. Datatool alarms use their own fobs which are separate from the keyed system.

Since you’ve already got the new barrel you can leave the old one in-situ for a moment, unplug it, plug the new one in and try it.

I think you have to drill the security bolts which hold the old barrel in, don’t you?

Yes, will have to.

TBH security bolts are a PITA only for the owners of bikes. theives don't bother undoing them to steal bikes, they just jemmy the ignition if the steering lock is on, causing even more damage to the bike.

This is why I never use the steering lock and when I have to replace an ignition I just use a normal pair of M6(?) bolts of a suitable length.

Oh crp yeh. I've had a look with my inspection mirror and there is nothing to get hold of. I believe they are torqued to snap off at the factory. I get it but ffs...

Good idea about plugging the new one in situ first to make sure it does everything it should. I'll do that.

I plan on taking the top tree off to do the job. I've had it off before when I did my head bearings. Not a bad job tbh. I'm a bit nervous about drilling the old bolts out though as they go into aluminium and I can imagine the threads getting feked up pretty easy.

You only need to take the heads off. Then the ignition will slide off and you can undo the remaining threaded bits with your fingers.

Angle grinder will do. You'll be throwing away the ignition anyway.

Your soooo right Nobby thank you. I've got a dremle with plenty of cutting wheels so I'll give that ago before I get the big boy out.

I really didn't think of doing it that way. So long as I plug the new one in to check it works fine first I don't need to worry about damaging the old one.
