i did this out of interest https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1HCv9S2Axo, is there any downsides to it ?? it looks to me like the only possible reason for that plastic bit is solely to reduce the noise ?? thanks...

It's called a resonator and is meant to reduce air intake noise. Because you removed it, you'll also be sucking unfiltered air into the engine, not to mention increasing the airflow, possibly making the engine run lean unless the fuel injection system compensates by adding more fuel, but then you'd lose fuel economy.

Unfiltered air and a lean mixture (do you want a hole in your piston?), or at best reduced fuel economy if the FI system can compensate. I would leave it alone.

Have just done this mod for noise purposes( staying alive) but have adapted it to at least try and protect engine,buy a cheap plastic kitchen sieve,cut a round in the thin plastic mesh big enough to cover hole and go round the outside,then use compression clip which was holding original on to seal around. Tube with mesh over hole and down side.simples,can double up mesh or use inline washing Maschine pipe filter from water inlet feed pipe with tape to secure,at least will give some filtration but increased noise will keep dozy drivers awake,hope helps

Tellstar4000, I think what J.M. is trying to say is as follows-
Bodging on a piece of wire mesh over the hole is not going to make any difference to the filtration.
It will still be unfiltrated air getting into the engine.
Also as already been mentioned, the carburation will be adversely affected, giving a weak mixture, possibly resulting in a damaged engine.
Bike manufacturers dont spend large sums of money on developing engines only for someone to come along and "tune" them by sticking a panscrubber in the inlet..
Best advice , leave alone, or, if you must, buy an aftermarket air filter, and if you do that you may still have problems with weak mixtures

Also that making your bike "louder" by drilling holes in the airbox is not going to make car drivers hear you and therefore be "safer".

Thought it would at least help but have taken your advice and am going to wait till gbmoto exhaught back in stock,no performance gains but at least my son hopefully will be heard and therefore seen.in meantime air filter back to normal
