Pillar Drill Recommendation?

Can anyone recommend a decent(ish) cheap (ish) pillar drill for light and occasional wood/metal work?

You'll probably pick up a Clarke bench mounted one for a oner
from machine mart.
If its for hobby/occasional use it may well serve
There are cheaper ones on Ebay of course, both new and second hand.
As for quality it's hard to say.
You may find a cheapie does you fine
or you may find it doesn't have the depth of throat you need
or the chuck is a bit shit or the spindle has some run out
or the bed isn't quite 90 degrees to the spindle
or other 'features' that make you wish you had paid a bit more.

If it's for say 6mm drills through ally or mdf a cheapie will do
if you want to put an 18mm reduced shank bit though 1" steel
the cheapies may struggle and distort with hard use

I would recommend having a look on Gumtree and Ebay , lots of used ones about cheap and people won't post them.

whatever you buy
I would add getting a good bolt down vise for it or a means of clamping down workpieces as a good idea
especially if you're drilling metal.
