Im about to buy a FZ8 2014 bike from a dealer, but when I asked if it had its red key.
They told me its missing the red key and its old books.
But comes with 2 black keys.

How bad is this?

looked into it more... pretty bad...
Without it I cant create new keys, and to get a new red key you need a new ECU, which cost anywhere between 1 and 2 grand.

I guess I wont be getting this bike :/

Though spoke to the dealer, theyre going to look into it. Maybe they can case old owner for the key.

I'd get a quote from a Yamaha service point for how much it would be to get a new red key and use that price to leverage a better deal Smile

You can’t buy the red key, they are only supplied with a new bike or replacement ECU.[/code]

If it’s anything like Honda keys, you can clone them. Had to do that for my 929 - just do it before you lose the key that you have.

Ok need a little advice...

The bike, is just under 19k miles. £3700 2014 bike.

Looks like its in great condition.

Dealer says there's no scratches or dents and chrome on forks are spotless.

The bike is nearly 200 miles away so I cant just have a look myself. It would be delivered to me for a small fee if I buy it.

But no history known about the bike.
Red key is missing, Dealer couldnt find it.
Handbook is missing, service log book is missing...

Dealer says they got the bike off "we buy any bike" who they have a working relationship with.

Given the bikes only from 2014, the missing books and key, i'm super wary. Its all a bit odd.

I'm leaning onto walking away, but wanted to see what you guys think first.

I wouldn't without the red key unless it was ultra cheap. Just my way as I'm paranoid about keeping spare keys safe, marked up and inthe keybox in the drawer in my bedroom.

Put the reg back into we buy any bike and see what they offer you. It will tell you how much the dealer is marking up and give you a position to lever money off from.

They got 2 black keys, dealer even said they would get a third made and cloned...

So I wont loose the keys...
Its just the lack of info. Dealer couldnt even say how many owners the bikes had.

Tried to check on webuyanybike, but it was asking for history on the bike rather than just the reg....

Looking on Autotrader, that does seem very cheap for the year and milage, to the tune of a grand cheaper

To be fair, webuyanyoldshit is almost always the last resort when selling any sort of vehicle, if i knew a bike was sourced as such, i'd steer clear

in fairness autotrader is always over the odds on prices...
But for this kind of bike about 4 grand seems normal. But yes 3700 is on the cheap side which is why ive been looking at it.

I suppose that is the issue here, personally i would never look at buying the cheapest insert bike here on the market, i would always be looking for something in the mid range, as the cheapest is almost always the cheapest for a reason,

Luckily you have found that reason, it's just wether having zero service history is worth the few hundred quid saving, as really you should be getting it serviced ASAP if the history is totally unknown, and without knowing the service intervals, that could easily be over £300 if its a major service

There are a couple of issues about missing the red key. One is that it raises questions about the bike’s provenance, plus it prevents you getting a new key if needed. The other - not yet mentioned - is that someone else may have that red key, so they can create spare keys for your bike.

It’s not the only fish in the sea.

Don't believe all the doom mongers!
https://www.motomatrix.co.uk/
These people will sort you out pretty quick and they don't charge fortunes. Maybe you can use the absence of a red key to your advantage to get an even better deal if you big up the cost of the problem, it certainly wouldn't put me off buying it if that was the only issue.
You need to send them your ECU along with the transponder(which is located under the ignition switch) along with a black key and they will create you a new red key and black key, and it also disables any other keys there may be all for around £350 -which is an awful lot cheaper than a lock set and new ECU

Yep indeed that was on my mind as well...

In any case ive chosen to walk away. I did some more digging and HPI checks (free) its MOT history is a bit troublesome and patchy.

But current advisory is ABS light is on. So theres something wrong there. It also has wear on the rear suspension pin.

It also has a worn split link on the chain.

Tbh the chain looked dry as fook and likely needed replacing...

But with all that and the missing stuff... time to walk away.

Oh and even though i didnt complete the history stuff webuyanybike replyed £2200 LOL

yeah i think i did something similar w/ my cbr600fx which had HISS - the bike only came w/ one key iirc so i had to get a a couple of spares

however the first couple of keys i bought weren't the right ones iirc, plus my mate had to get the bike to acknowledge the new keys once i'd sourced the correct ones - it's not a massive faff but it's more of a ball ache than you might think
