Hi Folks,
I have a 5L can of Automatic Transmission Fluid in the shed, sealed. But sitting for many years and never used or opened. Can I use this to lube my motorcycle chain? I can;t see it doing any harm?
I don't intend to use on any vehicle and don't really wanna chuck it away. Would like to make use of it somehow.
I have been using Gear oil, I believe 80W stuff but have now run out. But before I go and spend money on another gear oil, can I just use this on the chain say every 200 miles? Confused

You can use ATF, it's thinner than chain lube so will fling off making more of a mess, you'll need to be careful not to apply too much and you'll have to reapply it more frequently.

Well, you can but I wouldn't. ATF is very thin and does not stick to surfaces... in other words you'll be spraying the oil all over the street and your clothes/bike gear while riding.

You can use it as fork oil, it's around 5wt. Most Hondas of the 90s' actually specify ATF in the forks.

It also makes a really good penetrating fluid for stuck/rusted fasteners. Dilute 50:50 with acetone. Substitute paraffin for acetone if it's going to go near any plastic or rubber componants.

As above, it will lube your chain but will also make an unholy mess.

OK, thank you for your replies. Gear oil isn't expensive so I'll buy some more. 90w stuff.
As for the ATF, I'll mix this stuff with old engine oil and paint the fences in the garden Very Happy Thumbs Up

Yes, that as well. I use ATF in the forks of my XBR 500, as in accordance with the service manual. ATF is also used in 80's and 90's German cars as the power steering fluid.

What's wrong with using chain lube to lube the chain?

I thought this was a question about using up stuff that was already in the shed?

If you need chain lube, buy chain lube and stop titting around.
