Yes, I know everything goes up and gets stupidly expensive but I bought my gen 1 Hayabusa for around 6 or 7 grand new in 2007.

I'm sure it was announced at about £14k? Suzukis have been massively cheap for too long, one wonders how they can compete. That said, the new Honda CB1000 Hornet SP is like 9k with Ohlins and all that jazz. It's supposed to be a great bike too.

I did some maths recently with respect to the venerable SV650, and in real terms the SV is half the cash price it was when I bought my one brand new in 2002. I paid £5399, and taking into account inflation with a current price of £7399, that would have been about £4000 in 2002.

One wonders how Suzuki can do it. They don't have the volumes of Honda, nor the Indian and Thai manufacturing facilities. No wonder they are in a bit of trouble?

On the other hand competent bikes from mainstream manufactures can be had new for under £5000 which is not bad and affordable for most.
Most of us don't want a hyabusa let alone a goldwing.
I am liking the recent trend for very decent budget bikes as a way to encourage more riders.

There was a time where I said I'd never spend more than 10 grand on a car, let alone a bike. Nowadays? 10 grand is a reasonable price for a bike, and it seems you can't get much with any performance with 4 wheels for less than £25k, and anything vaguely decent is £40k+.

That said, some things are good value, like more humdrum cars, and you can buy a manual V10 Lamborghini Gallardo for £65k which seems like great value (!)

Touring the bike show again this year and it's quite eye opening how numbers are thrown around like they are nothing. Lots of 20k bikes and more. Lots of manufacturers fighting each other at the same price points all the way up to that aswell.

In the current climate, this is a very good gas bill bike. You pay for it every month and don't worry about it. That hayabusa can be had for £2.5k down and £163 a month and that's all many people will see. At 0% if the insurance hadn't been astronomical I'd have been tempted myself.

But that's why the industry is suffering, those PCP bikes have to go somewhere at the end of it, if they make it that far.

I wonder how many cash buys exist at that end of the market?

I wouldn't want the bike delivered, I'd want to collect it from their shop and for them to include their bike fitting service.

If you're spending thousands of pounds on a bike then spending a few hundred getting the bike to fit you perfectly doesn't seem unreasonable and if you're the one selling those top end bikes then you want those bikes to be perfect for each customer so including that service with expensive bikes would make sense.

Alternative way of looking at that hayabusa. Those PCP payments are cheap, despite the huge deposit.

If I had 18.5k sat in my savings account, it would currently be making around £60 a month in interest. This is giving me an option to essentially rent a brand new hayabusa for £120/month. Or probably £140/month with a reasonable deposit.

Seeing as it will depreciate hard, I certainly wouldn't want to own it at that price, but I like the idea of renting it for 2 or 3 times the interest on the purchase price.
