Hi all.

125cc scooter. Honda Pantheon 2002, about 12,000 miles, Yusa battery 1 year old.

It just dies when it hits a bump sometimes.

The first time, hit a pot hole and it wouldn't re-start and I pushed it home ( luckily only 10 mins away). This was with my wife on the back.
Got it home and went back to it 20 mins later and it started first time.

Today on the way home from shopping, I hit a smaller bump and it died again. It was just near my turn off so I coasted around the corner and it started up again.

I haven't had time to look into it yet. I'm guessing it's something electrica like a loose connection. I'm just looking for suggestions of where to start, apart from the obvious battery terminals. There's so much plastic on these things, it's going to take me half the day to get it off Laughing

Any help/suggestions from those in the know Thumbs Up

Battery terminals are a good start, as well as making sure the battery is properly fixed in place and not bouncing about and shorting against bodywork.

Loose plug cap is another easy tjing to check.

The earth strap to the engine is one that got me. Once you bite the bullet and strip away the panels, look for any cables rubbing and chaffing. Might also be the ignition key/lock and its connections.

If you don't find anything obvious, jiggle the cables with the engine running.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I should be able to have a look on Thursday.

Ask her to get off next time - will make it easier to push.

So, I've managed to get some time to take a look at the wiring.

After much swearing and head scratching, I've got the seat off the luggage rack and the under seat storage removed.

There's nothing obviously loose or corroded, I've checked the main earth to the frame, the ecu and any connections/relays.

They all seem secure, so I thought I'd reconnect the battery, start it and try wriggling things about. Now when I turn on the ignition I'm not getting an FI light. Temp gauge and time/mileage display still work, but no FI light and no start.

So one step forward, two steps back Rolling Eyes

Tilt Tilt Tilt

Modern "bikes" have a sensor that detects the angle and cuts the engine off if the bike leans too far over. Could be that's playing the prat?

Give it a jiggle while the engine is running and see what happens.

Some of them are awkward and it's not as simple as just shorting the connection to deactivate them. It's probably a few quid to replace if that's the problem.

Yes this one does. It will stop it starting but it doesn't stop the FI light coming on.

I did take it off yesterday, clean it up and have a fiddle about with it, but it seems undamaged and was securely attached. There's so many plastic panels, it's hard to trace the wiring. It appears to be a sealed unit, so I can't really look inside.

Got a bit more time today, so I'll be back in the garage to look again soon.

I was wondering about that as well. The rear shocks are knackered and with a pillion on the back the electrics may have got a bit rattled over the bumps.

What would an angle sensor even look like?

So, I've spent a few hours removing the front and centre panels. I now have access to the ignition switch and I've gone over the wiring loom and all the connections I can find, cleaning each one with contact spray as I go.

I can't find anything obviously wrong, no damage to the loom, in fact apart from servicing, I don't think this scooter has been messed around with, looks as it did when it left the factory (checked and it's actually only done 7500 miles in 23 years!).

After all the messing about the battery is now only at 12v so I've given up and I'll leave it overnight on the trickle charger.

So here's where things are now. Ignition on all electrics work, but no FI light and no fuel pump prime. could it be the starter solenoid?

Any ideas, any tests I could do? Electrics are a bit of a black art to me, but I do have a multi meter Rolling Eyes

BTW big thanks to everyone for the suggestions so far!
