Hi all,

Would you consider just over 18k miles quite high mileage for a 125cc?

I've spotted a couple of YBR's around that mileage that I'd like to take a look at, for short trips and the back lanes. I always check the bikes over etc to make sure they are in good condition and no niggles pop up.

Models are between 2010-2013. Any insights of whether I should aim lower mileage, or from your experience that it can be a good buy.

Many thanks Thumbs Up

I don't think any bike is high mileage until about 30,000 miles plus.

A YBR can take the abuse. If it's been looked after it'll be absolutely fine. If it's been owned by a clueless yoof who never did an oil change or adjusted the chain it'll be an absolute pit.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

I was thinking along the same lines. The one nearby looks in good condition, so I will probably go and take a look at it. It's up for £1395, but I'll try and get it for less if it turns out a decent enough bike.

That one?

You need the registration so that you can check the MOT history. It won't tell you everything but it will give you some idea of the life it's had.

I wouldn't put any value on the fresh MOT as the dealer selling it does MOTs.

The one month warranty it comes with makes me wonder how much confidence they've got in the bikes they're selling. Laughing

You do have a fair point. I do always question it when you can't check the MOT history when the reg is covered. There are a couple of others from private sellers that ive looked at too. I tend to avoid bikes that have been kitted out with massive exhausts and no mirrors Laughing

Bike hunting is never straightforward for me..

What you have to remember is 125's are often bought by youngsters who have little mechanical sympathy or knowledge of maintenance, and whilst I won't say they don't care, often as not they're not keeping the bike that long so the less obvious maintenance tasks get overlooked. When replacement parts are needed, they’re more likely to be from ebay rather than from the main dealer. Now that's not really their fault, we've all had to learn, but those bike you’re looking at are pushing 15 years old, gone through quite a few hands and things will be worn. As the old joke goes, it’s had one careful owner, the other dozen have been right bast*rds.

To me the bottom line is not the mileage (unless it’s astronomic), modern engines are far better made than the wrecks I learned on decades ago, but it’s the condition and how much it’s going to cost to put it right. Buying from a dealer gives you certain rights, but as Ste hinted at, a one month warranty is a waste of time and is probably riddled with so many get out clauses as to be a waste of paper anyway.

As mentioned, it depends on how its been treated.
I know a guy with one who has clocked up nearly 60,000 on it.
Its had regular oil changes and of course gone though the usual consumables like tyres, brake pads, shoes, chain, sprockets etc.

I have spoken to the younger riding element over the last year & quite a few don’t tend to bother getting theirs serviced until something happens and even then they seem to skimp with minimal work.

I had my brand new Z for a year & stuck 8000 miles on it. It has both stamps on it (750 & 7500) but I’ve had it in the shop for cleaning and checks an additional 4 times in that year. Over the top? Maybe? But I wanted no issues with the Kawasaki warranty if anything occurred.

Fingers crossed it’ll serve its next master well.

That's impressive. Fair play. I do all the chain and oil etc regularly and I'll buy a service kit online to give it a fresh oil change and spark plug when I buy something.

This is the bike that went from Bristol to Stornoway in the outer hebrides and back in pretty foul weather BTW
The only problem it had occurred when 24 miles form home on the way back.
A bad connection on the regulator or caused it to cut out with the ECU reporting coil problems, bu it was the intermittent connection that really caused it and its still running fine on the 'faulty' coil now the RR connection have been cleaned up

There's another bike near me i looked at that's done 14k and 11 month MOT. Only annoyance is it has advisories for a slight pulsating on front brake and notch in the steering head bearing.. suggesting the bearings atleast would probably need replacing at some point..

The joys of bike hunting Laughing

Both those jobs are pretty easy on a light bike like the YBR
and as only advisories, don't have to be done right away.
They're good haggling points to knock a few quid off though.
I'd be taking a good look/listen at the motor myself as the rest of
the bike is well with the scope of the home mechanic.

That one looks alright to me - not too much corrosion, tank paintwork looks cared for, if it doesn't rattle or smoke I reckno it'd do nicely.

There are certainly many worse examples on eBay! Laughing

Get the registration number from the seller and check the MOT history before travelling to see the bike but I'd be surprised if there's anything particularly terrible about it.

One thing I have noticed looking through listings from that dealer is some of the adverts say HPI checked and others make no mention of it.

Once you have the registration, you can use biketrader to HPI check it for free. Wink

I haven't been to see that one yet, as they keep appearing every few days on ebay and marketplace. The private seller ones seem a bit better priced and might be worth more of a punt.

No rush for me Laughing

Thanks for the advice. I have requested to have the reg so I can check it over. If they don't give it though I'm wondering whether it's worth going anyway to check it out? It's only 25 miles from me Laughing
