I fancy doing some winter motorcycle maintenance in my garage but, y’know, it’s winter. The garage is off-site (though just a few feet away), it has no mains electricity and I’m renting so I can’t do much to it. Would a propane/paraffin/diesel space heater under the up-and-over door project fumes and condensation into the garage? I think I’ve misunderstood how they work, they surely can’t be blasting combusted fuel into the space?

Something like this -

Anyone using similar?

that must need mains power for the blower.
You seem to be describing a 12v diesel heater or something more like portable gas heater with ceramic burners - these chuck out a lot of heat and radiate to wear you need it.
The chinese diesel heaters are OK but take five minutes or more to get going and you need a 5 minute cool down its inadvisable to just shut it off when red hot inside.
You can have it blow where you are working - they are a bit noisy but not outrageous.

Oh yes, the specification does say 230v. I thought it was solely propane-powered. Why would anyone choose that over a mains-electric heater? Running cost, I suppose, but I’m not looking for a long-term heater, just a weekend afternoon jobbie to keep me warm while I’m in there.

I use the internal heater gubbins from something like a Valor 12D. It's a big standard paraffin heater like what used to be touted as a room heater for homes only I don't bother with the big tin housing. It barely sips paraffin and throws out decent heat for a garage. Cheap to run and barely smells. Use decent paraffin and it works a treat.

Don't they say that if you're still cold whilst working then you're not working hard enough? Razz

I’m not expecting to work up a sweat by twirling spanners but I know what you mean. I was briefly in the garage this afternoon moving stuff around without actually doing any work. The air was mild but damp. I think I’m just looking for justifications as to why I’m not getting jobs done when really it’s lethargy. I think I have the hibernation gene but modern life requires I resist it.
