Hello all,

Ok i need some help guy's. I've got an RS125 and I was riding it along this morning when there was this sort of pop or bang and the engine started dying. I could just about manage to keep it going long enough to pull in somewhere, and as I came to a stop the engine just cut out. The bike behaved, and sounded like it had ran out of petrol, but I had just filled it up 5 minutes earlier! I tried to restart it but all I could hear was the starter motor going. So I checked out the spark plug and that was fine so im guessing it had to be a fuel blockage. Anyways I called my breakdown company out (the AA) and the guy took the spark plug out, put his finger over the opening of the barrel and started the starter motor and said there was no compression! He thinks the piston ring has broke but Im not so sure. Ive only had the bike 9 months from new and it shouldnt of gone that quick. Anyway it's at Taz Motorcycles in Peterbourough where they are gonna try and squeeze it in. Its still under warranty so it shouldnt cost much!!!
If anyone has any ideas what it could be pleaaase let me know.

Cheers Cool

Its a 2 stroke 125 Razz

I suspect your due a top end rebuild, dont panic, its fairly straightforward and reasonably cheap, one of the caracter quirks of a smoker is top end rebuilds every xxxx miles...

Might be wrong but thats most likely afaik

Depends really.. its a normal maintainace thing, usually best to do before it goes (as you can tell)

If youve only just brought it then if they dont do it for you then kick up a big fuss, not your fault its not been done, as far as your concerned it should go for more than a few months before needing anything like that doing..

If they ask you have kept the oil at the right level and warmed it up propperly before going anywhere and haven't been raging the liveing sheeit out of it.

Chances are they will do it for you as it shouldn't take too much time/money to do, one advantage of smaller bikes...

Good luck geting it sorted Thumbs Up

Well I got a phone call from the place where my bike is, and they say it is seized. I say it isnt!! The mechanic says to seize doesnt mean it has to seize solid (fair enough) but all that happened was when I was riding along the engine just started dying down, so I changed down gears and could still ride it (even though it sounded a bit weird)!! Doesnt sound like a seizure to me! Now he says my warranty might not cover it, as it's up to Aprilia!

Any advice guys?

might well have had a partial seizure mate, could have snapped a ring and seized, ummmm i reckon it should be covered under warrenty, i mean to me after 9 months thats not a wear and tear job. be honest do you rag it all the time? Rolling Eyes if yes then thats ur answer, if no then it shouldn't need top end rebuild before about 20,000 miles

I really dont rag it all the time! I know that people would think 18yr old on a 125 = rags it all the time. But I dont. I warm it up properly before each ride and wait until the engine is fully warmed up before I take it over 6k. I really am carefull with it. But Aprilia wont think that of course! If they say I have thrassed it they wont be able to prove it surely?

Hi

Aprilia can be funny about warrenties for seizures. They will not cover cold seizures as that is owner abuse (same for Cagiva). However a heat seizure they should cover. You need to tell them that the bike was fully up to temperature when it went bang, how many miles you had ridden it, etc.

They do recommend checking the piston rings at some of the services (used to be 6000km, which is when I replace them). Most people seem to replace them at 10000km (not sure how many miles you have done on yours).

New parts it is not cheap. Bit of a nasty one as if you fix it the cheaper way (replate the barrel, or fit a Makita barrel kit) then they might well get nasty about the warrenty on other items.

All the best

Keith

I think it is the piston ring that has gone as there is no compression. Surely the place I got it serviced should of checked the piston rings for me?

Hi

Depends how much you paid for your service. To do that you can probably add 4 hours labour to the cost of your service.

All the best
