FZR 600 Tyres (Again)

Hi,

After buying a digital tyre pressure checker and finding the pressures really low - I started pumping the rear tyre and noticed that it was seriously worn - to the extent I reckon it needs replacing! I have done 7,300 miles - is that about the life expectancy of the tyre? Also if I pump it up to the recommended tyre pressure I will almost be riding on slicks, whereas leaving it as it is there will be some tread due to the lower pressure!

BTW the front is fine and now pumped up to the recommended tyre pressure!

Pump it up to its correct pressure, ride to the shop and get another tyre.

Tyre wear depends on the compound of the tyre (the softer ones can go in 3000 miles), weight of the bike, power going through the tyre and type of riding you do.

I expect I'll get about 4000 or so out of my rear tyre.

What tyre you getting? I've got a 93' built FZR (94' registered). It was 94 when they were built with wider rims, mine has 3" rims. I've currently got a 150/60 rear tyre. Just wondering if you can cram a 160/60 rear on there?

To the first question, I am very light on tyres and the best I get is around 10000 miles from a set. It is easy to get less miles.

For the FZR600 there is very little choice of tyres. Like none. Your bike should have a 4" rim (earlier ones had a 3.5" rim, think the FZR600R from 1994 had 17" rims), but I suspect a 150 is the largest you can get on there due to the chain (check how close the chain runs to the tyre).

The only tyre that still seems to be available that is V or Z rated and is available in the correct size (140/60 18, stretching to a 150/60 18) is the Bridgestone BT010 (and the new BT014 which replaces it). Cheapest price I have found for BT010s is £180 fitted to loose wheels from "Road & Race Ltd" in Oldbury on 0121 544 5146. If you find a better price than this then please let me know (quickly ).

There are plenty of H rated tyres available in the right size (commonly used on the VFR400), but the FZR is a touch quicker than the VFR and thus edges out of the range of these lower rated tyres.

Oh cr4p! you telling me I won't be able to get tyres for my bike then? Yes my bike is a '93 and ok so it might be a 3.5" rim.

Out of interest, the tyres on my bike are virtually new and they are batllax (spelling) tyres.

The only tyres available are the BT010 and its replacement the BT014.

You bike should have a 4" rear rim. Think it was the early twin headlight version that had the 3.5" rear rim. None were fitted with a 3" rear rim that I know of.

I'll have to check. However while my bike has a '94 reg I'm sure it may of been built in '93.

So I'm looking for a 4" rim. I think its going to be 3.5" though as why else would it currently have 150/60 tyres?

It was the ones up to 1991 that came with the 3.5" rim and these had a 130 on the back. The ones from 1991 had a 4" rim and came with a 140 rear tyre. Just about all of them seem to have oversize 150 tyres on the back now.

can any1 tell me if a FZR600R 1994> rear wheel will fit straight in to my 1989 FZR600 swinging arm.....

Sorry this is not an answer, however if you can't fit it I found on ebay of all places a different swingarm that was touted as fitable to an FZR. Damn me I can't remember what it was.

TBH when my rear tyre goes I'll be seriously considering replacing the arm for one that can take a better sized wheel given the price of tyres for those 3.5" rims.

I don't know if the FZR600R rear wheel will fit in an FZR600.

The R uses a 17" rear wheel, which tends to suggest you would want a 160/60 tyre to have about the same diameter, and I am not sure that there is enough clearance between the tyre and the chain for this. This may not be a massive problem. If the rear sprocket on the replacement wheel is only slightly offset then it might be possible to get a front sprocket made up with a small amount of offset.

I also have a feeling that Yamaha might have used a larger wheel spindle on the R than on the earlier bike.

If there are no issues with the chain clearance then I suspect you could fit a complete FZR600R swinging arm with wheel. Yamaha are quite good at keeping things fairly standard. Also suspect that a Thundercat back end would fit just as easily.

The 1989 model has the 3.5" rim which had a 130 tyre as standard. Think there is a tyre still sold in that size, but if not the 4" rim used on the 1991~1993 bikes should fit and then you can use the BT010 in 150/60 18 size. Looking through a few listings it looks like you could get away with running a 160 rear tyre on the 4" rim, and the early FZR1000 used a 160 on an 18" rim so that might open up a little more choice (Michelin sell a few 160 tyres in that size).
