£500 is not *cheap* for a bike 17 years old, but if it's in good condition and the engine's fine then that sounds fair enough. They are solid, but make sure you take care of it - Keep up to date with oil changes, take it easy for the first mile or two in order to let the engine warm up, and don't run it for any length of time with the throttle fully open.

Since they only take a few quids worth of oil, you should probably change the oil now, regardless of when the previous owner said they last did it.

To get any kind of performance out of it, you'll need to thrash it, but this is okay since the engine is so hardy. Just not when it's still cold. It will beat practically all non-sports cars around town, but for higher speeds it just doesn't have the grunt Sad

About 1.5 litres max if I remember correctly. 90-100 mpg, you could get about 200 miles out of the tank. Ah, and certainly don't run it at full throttle for extended periods, the CG languishing in my Mum's garage was held at full throttle for 10 minutes, we think the main bearings are boogered.

I imagine 60 will be about full whack for it if you have any mechanical sympathy though. The redline will be at about 10,000rpm, which is quite high enough if you think what the rockers are doing in there. Shocked

errrr, does this apply to old GS125s aswell?? If so why? mine did 20 miles each way to work, 5 days a week, for about 4 month and at least 12 miles each way was at full throttle. Hasnt done it any harm. Infact when I checked the compression with my dads little pressure meter thing, it was better than my mates GS. His is only 4 years old and has done 25,000 miles less. A tad worrying for him I think.

Well, I (semi-) regularly run mine (CG125 engine) at around 8000 rpm for an hour or so doing about 45-50 mph going home on the A roads past Nottingham... No problems with it yet, though I

I agreed with the not fully open throttle thing as I have seen the results. It's not neccesarily going to always be the case though, we could have just got a bad 'un.

I rode a Honda C70 130 miles to Newcastle, flat out all the way, I only throttled off when forced to. The valves were bouncing in top gear for at least an hour solid up the A19. I rode this journey 5 times there and back, no damage occured.
