Any tips for riding in these conditions?

I ride on pretty good roads, most of them are repaired as soon as they get damaged. As they are pretty much the only way to get into Bridgnorth from the Dudley end of things.

But, with winter rusing in (yeah, damnit, did i notice this morning!) have you guys got any tips for riding on ice, through snow and fog?

The usual "Slow right down!" is an always helpful tip! Wink

Thanks in advance,

Nathan

Avoid sharp quick movements, turn smoothly through the bend.

And erm, dont hit a powerband going round a bend. Laughing

"Avoid sharp quick movements" Would that include avoiding the nova/volvo that just pulled out on you? Wink

Don't coast... with clutch in and then suddenly letting it go! Look at the road surface where tyres are - usually most grip. Don't lean too much in corners and take bends much much slower. Give plenty of distance to stop and use engine braking.

Yeah, Ive already got into the habit of riding in the wheel ruts. The potatoe farmers are having a ball of a time with thier tractors/combine's at the moment. Sad

Also, I know that you're supposed to stear into a skid, and DONT brake. But what kinda sensation does it give the old butt?

My advice for riding on ice would be... don't!

You'll probably feel the bike going slightly sideways. Under no circumstances touch the front brake - if the front wheel locks you're going down.

true, if you do find your back end starting to slide out the best thing to do is to slowly let off the throttle and draw in the clutch, otherwise the back wheel will continue to spin, with the clutch in, your wheel is free to grip at its own will, if you were going at a fast speed and the back started to come out the worst thing to do is shut off, cos the back would grip and throw you miles into the air hehe, but i doubt ull get that speed in snow Very Happy

-Dave , The slide king -.- (Couple 'a years of speedway help with that )

Usually it tends to open slightly and let liquid out. Shocked Shocked

Seriously though if you do feel the bike start to slip try not to tense up, stay as relaxed as you can, hard to do but tense muscles gives you less control of the bike.

Also if you do ride on the road when it is slushy, keep an eye out for twats straddling lanes, as they will kick up plumes of Icy slush at you. It hurts! Crying or Very sad

Pretend you have flat tyres and no brakes. Worked for me on the way home tonight.

Ignore tailgating cagers, go as slow as you dare/need to, the bottom line is you want to get home in one piece.

On the way home from work yesterday (about 30 miles on the M1), in very heavy snow, I passed an Aprilia Pegaso riding on the hard shoulder, with his indicator on. While this is totally illegal, and there are potential hazards, he was safer there than anywhere else............feck the law, take your best chance. Thumbs Up

^^If it was heavy snow, thats probably what I would do as well. What would the coppers want?

Someone taking up a bit of the hard shoulder?

Or a squished biker and 10 miles of traffic behind them?

My advice for fog is to ride very slowly indeed and at night don't bother putting full beam on, the light just bounces back in your eyes, I prefer to be able to see the road surface than a haziness. Smile
