Hi, I'm new to biking. Took my CBT last month & bought a Honda City Fly. I've been a car driver Evil or Very Mad for 20 years.

So far I've fallen off once, trying to do a u-turn on a sloping road and lost balance. Embarassed

Twice lost the back-end when going around a roundabout Shocked , but managed to recover. Cool

I've just booked my theory test for Dec and hope to take the standard test in June 05. I was going to try for DAS, but just don't feel confident enough yet.

The confidence will come, if you do an assessment with an instructor and after the first day you will feel much more confident and the instructor will tell you if you are ready to go onto the bigger bikes, if not then just do it on a 125, its not the end of the world and as im vertically challenged and couldnt fit on the 500's it was fine for me and now after 8 months I ride a vfr400.
Good luck with the theory Very Happy

Hopefully, by the time I'm ready for my test, I will have overcome my concerns, which is more about the weight of the bike (especially doing the dreaded u-turn).

Thanks for the advise

Yeah you'll find that being able to hop on it and ride around without someone looking over your shoulder (like with cars) you'll build your own 'style' and get alot of confidence quicker.

Just a guess but i reckon you'll be lookin at a test alot sooner than June 05, especially once the weather begins to turn you wont want to wait till the end of summer!

Good luck with Theory, just take a look at the information about it on the boards for so tips!

I hate U turns! If I never do another one in my life it will be too soon, I avoid them at all costs and will ride for another mile down the road to a roundabout rather than do one. If I do have to do one now my feet are down!

In all seriousness though, it took me 2 days to master them and I couldnt do them at all when I started my course, if you have a good instructor then you wont have a problem. Just dont worry about them, go with the flow of it and remember to look further down from the point you want to end up and NEVER look at the curb as that is where you will end up if you do!

As for the weight of the 500, sit on it and see how you feel. Very Happy

I found the 500 far easier to ride than the 125, especially on the U turns.

Agreed. I find U turns and general slow riding control a lot easier on a bigger bike. The weight of it tends to go un-noticed as far as I found. As long as i am moving im fine, its only when you stop and it tilts slightly that you feel the weight.

After riding around on a bigger bike for a while I was amazed at how twitchy my 125 was, and how light. Also forgotten how bad the clutch was though, much prefer the 500 in that respect. All you need is confidence, and that comes quite quickly.

Damn right, just the way I feel. After having passed my test on a 125 and got myself a 500, I feel more confident and you dont feel as vulnerable. Its great Thumbs Up

Too easy to go too fast though Thumbs Down Very Happy
