For example if you had 3 years at the time of a claim and they paid out, your renewal would be based on 1 years NCB. If you claimed and your insurance co recovered all their costs from another company, then your insurance would renew with no loss of NCB. Whether you would actually get an extra years ncb as you had claimed may depend on the company.
As for Jammy's thread, if no insurance company has been involved I wouldn't tell them about it.

Rampdale didn't even ask me, the guy on the phone seemed really, really, really moody, asked me a few questions and asked for my best quote (which I lied and said was £200 under what I got), and he beat that by £80 ! Got a reference code and everything ! Now If I ring back I'm gonna try get it down more by saying I got theory done etc.
When I told Bennetts I had an accident, they bumped up the premium by £180, even though it wasn't my fault, and the third party drove off. Bastards. ____________________ RooRoo: just like the time i stuck my finger up my arse with no lube at all and she didnt talk to me for hours |

Didn't the woman pull out on you though? Any witnesses?
What's she claiming against you for?
"He scratched my car when I pulled out in front of him, I want some compensation"

| instigator wrote: | How does this NCB business work anyway?
Once you renew your insurance, does your company send you out a sheet saying so? How do you prove to other insurance companies that you've got an NCB? |
In the most basic terms you get a years no claims bonus for every full policy term you go without making a claim. Either within a set of renewal documents, or once your policy has lapsed, you will have a letter stating your ncb entitlement for you to pass on to your next company. If you cancel or lapse a policy and you don't have another vehicle to insure, your ncb will be valid for 2 years, after which time you'll have to start all over again.
For car insurance, windscreen claims (if you have cover) generally don't count as a claim for ncb purposes. When you make a claim you won't get a years no claims bonus for the year you claimed in, and if either the claim is still in negotiation at renewal, or is settled and your insurance company hasn't been able to recover all of their costs, you will lose up to 2 years of your ncb (I say up to as you can't lose what you don't have). If a claim is subsequently settled after your renewal, they will reinstate your ncb, and if you are still insured with them, amend your policy and issue any refund/reduce any future payments accordingly, or if you are not, then they will send you an amended letter with your new ncb entitlement.
Hope this helps.

Where does your excess come into it?
Might as well send them your account of what happened along with the details of your witness and let the insurance companies argue and decide who is at fault, the worst that will happen is they decide you're at fault and give her the cheque, but they might decide she was at fault or split the blame 50:50 (could be split anything, jus tan example) and you then get given a cheque. |
