I just bought this battery from eBay

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7938128080&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT

i had to put the stuff in myself. The question is do i now charge the battery?? It did not say anything about what to do once i have put the stuff in the battery.

The stuff? You mean acid?

I would of thought it wont need charging, pure guess though, I'm useless with tech questions

stick a voltmeter across it, my guess is that you won't read anything, I believe it needs charging.

I'd wait until Kickstart or someone similar gives you a definite answer before you go blowing up stuff based on my assumptions.

How did you know what strength acid to put in??? hope you got it right or you could end up with a battery that puts out no-where near 12V.

Anyway, it should be charged if its never had acid in it. Even so to check put a 0.2A current regulated 13.5V supply accross it, it will charge till the voltages equalise then slow to a trickle, this is how I check/charge all my batteries and it is impossible to overcharge them this way.

The amount isnt the problem, its the strength. If you got it with the battery then your OK. Its just when you get it from somewhere else that it can be a problem, mine came from newcastle universitys chemistry lab Very Happy its nearly right, about 12.5V loaded, 13.7 unloaded.

Anyway, if it came with the battery it will be fine.

If you can find yourself someone who's got an optimate or something similar, a full battery restoration/maintenance kit in one little grey box.

Basically you can connect it up it can tell you three things -

Charged
Needs charging
De-salinized (i think thats the right term)

which basically means its totally f**ked, or at least it needs something changing/being sorted.

Put the acid in, leave it for twenty minutes, connect to bike, thumb
start, go go go. Take the bike out for a ride

Don't know the science but after twenty minutes the battery is ready
to start the bike, after that running the bike will charge it normally.

i charged it until the light came on on the battery charger to say it was full. I put it in the bike and tested it. Was ok, i will use it properly tomorrow on the way to college. Does anybody know any way to stop the battery getting damaged in the damp?? (if it does get damaged) Thumbs Up

Vaseline, WD40 or some such oily water resistant/ displacing substance spread/ sprayed on the terminals should keep them from getting corroded. Vaseline has the seal of approval from my mum at least when she used it on batteries whilst living on the west coast of Scotland.

The rest of the battery shouldn't be affected by the damp, it's just a big plastic box. A wipe down every year or two wouldn't do any harm, but is probably not needed.
