Hello everyone.

I have a question about GC engines. Can anyone tell me if the engine design has ever changed over the years? I recently bought an 04 model and am still runing it in at 300 miles. I have read lots of reviews and opinions on the cg i have heard top speeds quoted at 45, 50, 55, 75 mph. My cg will do about 37 MPH in 4th gear before needing to change up to fifth. Can anyone tell me if this is because its not fully run in or are the new models slower for any reason? I am not expecting a speed machine from a 4 stroke pushrod engine, but the dealer told me that it would cruise at 50 and i could take it to 55 easily.

Thanks, Jim Very Happy

If you're still running it in you should be changing up lower.

I presume it's a UK model?

Mine did 65 in 5th on a straight; got up to 75 with a hiull and some wind once Smile.

CG engines are very tough.. and the only ay you'll get that bike to move is to use that little engine hard, and work those gears well.
Treat with expensive oil once a year minimum..

You should know when you need to upshift by gears.. it all depends on what conditions your in. If your riding against wind, the engine will have to work very hard before each upshift, or you will loose speed on the next gear.

We have a CG engine that did 30,000 miles, and is now in a dirt bike, and gets the living S*** thrashed out of it, yet it still does the job Laughing Thumbs Up

Good luck Smile

Hi Jim...
I have a 2004 Honda CG, and it is currently on approx. 2,800 miles.

It has always pretty much done about 50 in 4th gear before needing to change up to 5th.

It didn't take too long to run in, and now does about 67/8/9 in 5th on a straight, and can get up to about 75ish downhill on a good day with not much wind in my face.
How fast can you get from yours ?
Considering ours is the same year they should be pretty much similar.

The manual on a CG125 gives the top speed as 63mph. I managed to get nearly 70mph on a downhill run, going back up the same hill into a headwind I could only manage 45 mph.
Thumbs Up

Hi,

Thanks for the replys.
Do you think that its just because my bike is being run in or is it unusualy slow Mad ? My bike is a 54 registered UK model in silver. I cant see any reason why it should be slower than normal, everything is fine and its an excelent little bike Smile.

Thanks, Jim

When i'm thrashing my 2001 bike, i'll come close to 37mph in 3rd gear Thinking Does your bike have marks on the speedo, that tell you the maximum speed you can downshift into a certain gear? The one for 4th gear is at 50/55mph on my bike, and I generally use this as the target before shifting up to 5th.

You probably shouldn't be trying to work the engine so hard since it's not run in, but I don't see how being a new engine would cause its performance to be so less...

Well, all I can suggest is see what the dealer says at it's first service....500 miles I think on a new CG..that is when mine had her first one.

To me though, 300 miles and new or not, 37mph in 4th gear would not have suited me and I would have questioned it, as you have.

I did not, by any means, thrash my bike at 300 miles on the clock, but I do recall it going a damn lot quicker that 37.

As for the top speed being 63..I don't know how they tested this..probably by the sounds of it on a straight flat with some wind.
Going up a hill in wind..yes..about 55 for my bike...50 in strong winds.
In the summer..on a calm wonderful day (do you remember !!??..no, neither do I !! Mr. Green Thumbs Up ) ..I got up to 72 on a flat.

Hello,

My bike seems realy slow compared to everyone else's Crying or Very sad .
Here is when i have to change gear (MPH).
1st 10
2nd 20
3rd 27 vibration sets in.
4th 37
5th only managed 47 upto now as i dont want to go any faster. Even if i did go faster it seems like i am running out of gear range.
I know that they do not restrict CG's so i am totaly confused and extremely dissapointed. I will ask the dealer but i am sure he will tell me some lies as he wont want to do anything about it. Is there anything that anyone can think of which is causing my bike to be slow??? The engine runs fine, its as if they have droped the wrong gearbox into my bike.

Thanks, Jim Sick

I'd say wait till it's run in (600 miles for sake of argument Whistle ), then give it full throttle in fifth. I should hope it would do 60 without _too_ much trouble. If it doesn't do that, then you know something's not quite right.

Until you get used to revving the bike as much as it needs to get much out of it, it'll seem awfully high, but CG's thrive on being ragged, don't they? Shifty Just give it plenty of oil changes when it's being run in (I changed it at 200, 500, 800 and 1000 miles I think) and some decent quality stuff at intervals of a maximum of a year after that, and it should be fine.

Past 50-55 or so, there's not an awful lot of grunt left anyway, though just about 8000 or so there is a little bit of oomph. I'd not think you've taken it that far yet. There is an awful lot more range in fifth than you might think really. It'll pull from 30 to 60 without complaint.

(Though I'll be honest, on my rather ponderous CG-powered Hongdou Laughing, I did go up a tooth on the front sprocket.)

Hi Mchagis. Thanks for the help.
I will take your advice and see what happens. I'm abit woried about changing the oil because of waranty, I think a torque wrench is needed when tightening the sump plug back up. What i find worrying though is that peopl say their cg will do 70mph which seems a very long way away when i have just changed into top gear at 37mph, its as if 1 gear will do more range than the other 4 put together. Thanks for the help mate, I will go shoping for some good semi synthetic oil.

Jim

Hi

I would agree. Get it run in and serviced, then check again. Most people seem to manage mid 60s out of the CG on level ground, and the gearing is high enough for them to take advantage of down hill sections.

All the best

Keith

My advice (for what its worth) would be to keep to those speeds till about 600 miles then go for it. What do you mean by 'have to change gear'? if its just vibrations ignore them! simple as that really lol. Top speeds for my GS, which is almost identical, were:

1st: 15
2nd: 25
3rd: 36/7
4th: 50
5th: 50+

Top speeds were about the same as mentioned above for the CG, about 70 on the flat. There is an excellent way to cure the vibrations, go on an old english twin (eg. my dads norton atlas) These vibrate so much that anything else feels silky smooth!

Hi Pipnet11,

When i say i need to change gear it is because of vibrations. Once i have done another 200 miles i will open it up abit, I worry that i am over revving the engine though. I gues when people say their bike will do 55-60 i guess that their bike is screaming down the road with mega vibration???? Smile Is it true that the CG engine needs high revs to keep it going throught he gears?

Cheers, Jim

Ps. When changing the oil is it ok to use a different make once you have dropped the last lot??

You should feel the need to change gear when you can actually feel and hear the engine 'groaning' as I call it. You can hear it struggling. After a while you get to know this point before you hear the engine struggle and so change up instinctively.

Yes, you must be careful of over-revving, but as all new riders do, they thrash the gears and engine at some point. The CG was made for this...it can take one hell of a beating !!

I don't know why people find the fact a CG can do 55-60 totally amazing...mine does so smoothly with hardly any effort.
I don't totally understand what you mean by 'mega vibration'. On my bike I have never encountered this.

As far as high revs to keep it going up through the gears...no. I can lay off the revs and change up one or two gears.

This bike was made to take a harder hammering than I could ever give it.

Oh....and just a bottom note here :-
My Fiance tested the bike (on your behalf this afternoon Wink ... and he was in 4th gear and at 55 comfortably before he felt the need to change up to 5th)

Hi Jodie, I took the bike to 40 today in 4th gear and it felt like i needed to change up. I cant understand why your bike will sit at 55 nicely in 4th when mine is needing to change at 40. I cant see that there is any problem mechanicaly with my bike. I will definately be asking my dealer about it. When i said mega vibration i was probably over exagerating but when at 40 i could feel the footpegs and handle bards vibrating. At the moment 55 is a distant and amazing speed to me Surprised .
Thanks for your help with the testing Smile

James

Hi again Surprised

Bear in mind your bike is not fully run-in yet, so don't get too troubled.
See...you have seen an improvement in the mph already.

I read earlier (at start of thread) that the dealer told you it would go to 50-55 and cruise..seems he didn't know what he was on about. It will cruise at 65. Don't be scared to go for the speed, (when you have ridden the bike a bit more) .. push it beyond 55..it will do more than that..it is made to. Thumbs Up

The vibration you are feeling may come from the engine struggling then. Mine has some vibration when facing the wind,..it is only normal.

All I can say James, is give it another couple of hundred...see then.
Take it for it's free first service (you do know it's free yeah ??) ..and then see what they say if you still can't get 50-55 in 4th...and a top of late 60's on the flat.
If they give you cr*p saying it will only do 55 top in 5th...send them round my house ! Twisted Evil Thumbs Up

The RHS of the engine in mine vibrates like a bugger at about 7-8000 rpm. I just have to wind it up to the red line to get rid of the vibration. Shifty

Hi Jodie and Mchaggis,

Thanks for giving me the extra confidence Smile

Aparently the service is free except for things needed like oil, otherwise free Laughing . The fastest i have been is about 47 in 5th gear which felt fast after riding at 35 for 350 miles Mr. Green even so my old speedfight would do 60 on the clock (more like 50). I've had the bike in the kitchen today and gave it a good clean and i'm now crossing my fingers. Mchaggis, does your bike have a rev counter ?

Thanks for your excelent help, im realy pleased i found this forum.

James

Proximity, If you want to go for a ride some time once my bike is run in just give me a pm Sure we could meet up somewhere.

It used to, before the "interesting" quality of the Chinese engineering meant it went tits up. Cue my repair job, which would have been fine except that I forgot that turning the needle on the spindle would make it loose, resulting in the needle falling off about 2 miles later. Rolling Eyes

It'd be nice if it worked, but I know I'd scare myself into going more slowly with it working; all that time at 9-10000 rpm can't really be healthy, can it? Whistle

I guess if you make regular oil changes with good quality oil and warm the bike up properly before its thrashed then things should be ok Smile . Ive just bough a torque wrench from machine mart so that i can tighten up my sump plug properly after oil changes, should come in handy for other maintenance jobs.

BTW, does anyone know whether changing the oil would invalidate waranty? I'm going to change every 2000 miles.

Thanks, James

Back on the vibration thing. I used to worry about over-revving the engine, untill I found that if you went through it the vibrations disapeared totaly at about 55-ish, and it turned into a very smooth ride.
