Honda Bros chain adjustment

How do I do it and how tight/loose should it be. At the moment I can push the chain up about 2 inches and down 1.

Also how can you tell when you need to get a new chain?

Right, it should defeately be less than that, at its tightest point dont forget! depending on the bike really how loose/tight it should be.....

You chain needs changeing if its visibly knackered, or if it can't be adjusted any more, also if the sprockkets are hooked or obviously worn in any other way they need replaceing as does the chain with them...

To adjust it loosten the axle nut, then use the adjusters at the ends of the swing arm, turn them both EQUALY small ammounts at a time, clockwise should tighten the chain... when your done tighten any locknuts and the axle nut.

When you change the chain you need to change both sprockkets as well at the same time, because they wear together...

The odd thing is that it doesn't have adjusters at the end, which is why I'm confused.

Yup I can tell you.

Well, the manual on my PC can, far too hard to explain.

Loosen the eccentric bearing carrier pinch bolt.

Turn the eccentric bearing carrier clockwise or counterclockwise by the bearing carrier wrench to obtain the drive chain slack as necessary.

Tighten the eccentric bearing carrier pinch bolt.

You really need a C-spanner to do it, or a hammer and a punch.

Ah I see. So after loosening the pinch bolt just turning the disc parallel to the wheel adjust the tension.

Can't find a C-spanner anywhere though, hoping a screwdriver and hammer will do the job.

Had a couple of people asking for the manual that I was refering to, so there is a link to an online version below. Although it is clearly for the 650cc version, everything is pretty much exactly the same.

You'd be doing well to do what I have done and save the lot to your PC incase it ever goes offline.

Well I know exactly what I'm doing but the bloody pinch bolt is really tight and no matter what spanner or spanner with attached lever will do it.

Anyone in Luton with a hefty wrench and c spanner?

Try giveing it a dose of WD40 (dont get your tyres, maybe put a rag behind the bold) get a socket to fit on the bolt then use a hammer on top to give it a short sharp "tap" this should losten the bolt a bit... a mallet is an amazeingly satisfying piece of equipment to own and use Cool

I can imagine that being a bloody fiddley place to be swinging a mallet so take care!

Oh yeh, when you put it back... copper grease, lots of, is your friend Thumbs Up

Nooooooooooooo don't use a hammer and punch, it'll knacker the adjuster and then you'll find out exactly how the whole rear axle goes together when you replace it!!! I got a double ended C-Spanner from the local bike shop. One end fits the chain adjuster and the other fits the shock Smile

(The swinger and adjuster assembly for the Bros is very smiliar to the NC30 and my housemate has a Bros 400)

When you're setting the chain tension, you should really do it with the bike laden (ie with you on it), but you can allow for that slightly. You should measure the slack about half way between the sprockets on the bottom run and it should be about and inch on so. Theres a picture on my chain guard of what the slack should be Smile

Went out and bought a doubled ended c-spanner. Doesn't bloody fit for some reason. Well I will try it in the light so I can actually see it but by the feel of it the spanner is too wide Confused

.

Was VERY tempted to try the screwdriver and hammer technique since two mechanics I went to suggested it. (A&M & Dave Bliss).
