Hiya,

I went out on my bike after leaving it for about a week stood (usually too drunk for riding Very Happy). Went for a ride and it started fine so off I went. Rode for a good half hour with no problems.
However, after while the indicators began to act up. They'd stick on, or not start, stuff like that. Also the displays had become very dim as had the headlight. Took it home and let it run for a bit without lights, after which it seemed OK. Put it down to it having been stood and left it be.

Went out today (two days later) and the problem is still there https://www.thebdaman.f2s.com/tonguesmilie.gif. So I rode around for a bit and the display in particular got very dim, and again the indicators began to fail. I did discover though, that if I rev the engine (and keep the revs up) everything works again. Lights come back up, indicators flash etc. etc.

So any ideas? Battery going? Needing a top up? Electrical fault? All advice gratefully recieved Thumbs Up Very Happy

Well the symptoms you describe suugest you have a low voltage until you rev the engine fairly hard.

This tells us that your charging circuitry/alternator are fine, your battery may be low on fluid, low on charge or on its way out.

I suggest you check the electrolyte (water/acid) level and top-up as needed, then charge the battery with a quality charger. Refit it to the bike and try agian, if it still plays up, or plays up after a while, I suugest you fit a new battery.

If you have access to a voltmeter, check the voltage across the battery, if its less than 12volts dc, somewhere betwen 10-11 volts dc, then it probably has a duff cell, and needs changing.

Well, I checked the level this morning and that is fine. Got my multimeter out, and it read 12.05v so that appears fine too https://www.thebdaman.f2s.com/tonguesmilie.gif I don't have access to a charger though so I can't do that bit, but if it reads as good surely it won't need it? I ran her around for 20 minutes today without lights etc. so hopefully it'll have charged it back up. If not, though, dunno...

Earth points? Where would they be? And would a problem with them cause me this kind of issue?

unless one of the indicators is shorting out, shorting the rest of it out, on my bike, the cheap tarty tailight fused together as the bulb fixings broke, causing it to dramatically dim the rest of the lights, and also affect other things like pv servo motor

i reckon something may be shorting out if the engine works fine without lights, try disconnecting a few and see if your lights still dim, indicators, tailight etc and try to find a fault

either that or your battery just isnt charging properly

12.05 v isn't really very good - it should be at least 12.5 volts. Take each battery lead off in turn and clean the face of the lug and the top of the battery post. Use something non-metallic like the side of a matchbox or one of those green kitchen scourers.

Follow the negative lead down to where it bolts to the engine or frame and clean that end too - specially the metal bit it bolts to should be clean. Scrape it clean with a knife blade.

I had a similar problem to this on my NSR. It was caused by the live wire on one side of the main fuse being loose actually in the fuse holder. Snapped the fuse into the clips properly, and bobs your uncle, sorted Thumbs Up
