Been noticing that ever since I've had a motorbike I have slowly been getting a bit soft around the middle because I ride absolutely everywhere. If its more than a 15 minute walk I defiantely take the bike.
It's just so much more fun that walking Mr. Green

Anyone else noticed the onset of paunch since getting a bike?

If you dont exercise then it's easy to let yourself go a bit, but on the other hand the more you ride the firmer your bum gets! Thumbs Up Always good thing in my opinion - be it your bum or your partners Wink

I can't gain weight at all, so it only affected my physical stamina, really. Now that I've moved to Florence I have to walk everywhere, though, so I'll get in shape again. Until I get ahold of a bike, of course Mr. Green.

You are obviously riding too slowly, if you are having to climb about all over the bike you will keep fit Wink Why not try some motocrossing?

It isn't the paunch you need to worry about, it is the piles!

I joined a gym last Feb and lost a bit of weight. I was just starting to get fit when I passed my DAS in May and bought bike.

I then did not go anywhere near the bloody gym until 2 weeks ago.
I had been paying out £38 a month using the lame excuse that 'I might go tomorrow, I don't want to cancel 'cos I will have to pay more to re-join'.

What Crap.

I put on all the weight I'd lost (& more) and spent the whole time out on the bike.
I am now paying a tenner a month more for full membership and am forcing myself to go. I did have the clever idea of using the bike as an incentive, the mode of transport to get to gym & back......until I came to the conclusion that I needed 2 lockers to store helmet & leathers and didn't like getting my helmet wet with my wet hair.
So once again laziness prevails! Yay!

Are you guys who say you cannot put on weight under 20 by any chance? In which case just wait a few years...

I have lost a stone in the past month, my secret was to switch to brown bread (and not drink five pints of guiness every night). Wasn't really trying to lose weight just kind of happened.

It's the complete opposite for me: I used to drive everywhere, which takes absolutely no muscle use at all. Now, I not only ride everywhere I go, which takes a moderate amount of muscle use, but I spend at least a couple hours a week hauling ass out on the back roads, which really works my arms, legs, back, and midsection. Beats the hell out of sitting at home watching TV or some such drudgery.

Biking only makes your lazier when your using them lol! When you have got to the lazy stage from riding everywhere, but now have 2 bikes inthe garage that should have been back on the road months ago, then a strange reversal begins. Im too lazy to fix/work on my bikes, but as a result of this it means ive had to start walking and cycling everywhere again, so yes bikes can make you fit, but only when they are broken! Now ive started going back to the gym, which also means im always too knackered to go in the garage to sort out me bikes, is that a good enough excuse anyway?

I am 18 and while having my bike I have bulked up certainly, but not gotten fat, having a physical job (I enjoy just working, not being an office kinda guy, pay isn't the big deal, just physical - no worry after 5 - kind of work, and it keeps me in decent shape.
As I get older I guess I will watch my diet and maybe do actual exercise, but for now I'm all good.

It's not the extra fat you need to worry about it's the exhaust fumes from the vehicle in front going straight into your lungs.

Biking is good for my health.

- As Annabella said, hauling the bike in & out of the shed (and sometimes just getting it round corners!) gives me an upper body workout.

- As Leggy Girl said, if you clench your bum & grip with your thighs/knees like you would on a horse, that bit gets worked too.

- Girls! Your bike is an ideal place to do your pelvic floor execises!

- Most importantly though, I can use my bike to de-stress. If I come in from work with steam coming out of my ears and wanting to kill something It takes about 40 minutes of riding (just far enough to get out of town usually) til I start to feel better. After an hour I am usually grinning.

Stress is a major factor in many modern illnesses, so my bike is definitely good medicine! Thumbs Up

I must agree with everything you said babyyam, specially the stress part. Even if bikes might get some people fatter it has to be better than car... I mean at least you move your body about Wink . But if putting a few extra pounds is troubling you just go to the gym. It can do you wonders. Moreover, it's also a known to make you feel happier and fights stress. Cool Ask my six pack Twisted Evil .
