Have you checked out the ignition pulse generator to see if the timing rotor is damaged or the generator coil is faulty?

Is there no Haynes manual available for your bike as it will tell you how to check for this.

Hi

That it sparks tends to suggest the ignition system is OK. Yes they can have problems but most of the time they either work or they do not. However one thing worth checking is the ignition timing, as the flywheels are located with a woodruff key and these can shear off allowing the flywheel to move a bit. Result is a healthy spark at totally the wrong time.

Beyond that I would say that a carb / fuel issue is the most likely. Clean the carb out again. Also check the reed valves are sealing correctly (easy to whip those out while the carb is off).

Also worth doing a quickly compression check. Not unknown for piston rings to strick when a bike is left standing for a while. Although this is unlikely it is an easy check to do.

All the best

Keith

I know there is a haynes manual for the 1987 - 1993 Dts and the post 1997 ones.

Could it be that the breather hose or the fuel line is blocked with rust?

If there is an air lock or part blockage somewhere, some fuel will get through and build up in the carbs. The bike will fire, but then the fuel will run out and the engine will die.

I suggest trying to clean out every tube that was ever connected to the old tank.

Also check the carbs are set up to provide enough fuel to the engine. I think there might be some sort of needle adjuster for the main jet...

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

On your bike it's called the Magneto Rotor.

Do what the other have suggested and check/replace fuel line hose as they maybe clogged with that rust and so it's severely restricting the flow of fuel but you may end clogging the carbs again when the particles of rust along with some fuel get into the carbs and clog up the jets.

Once yoy've removed the fuel line you could try using a high pressure jet of air through it to see if any crap comes out of it, but then you may have still got clogged up carbs except thats disassembly job of it to inspect it.
