So, I've been going over my starter problem and me and a mate tried to get the starter motor out to try and solve the problem.

The problem is that the damn generator coil case doesn't even budge!
We've, obviously, removed all the screws but still, the damn plate won't budge. There's no screw left that could be restraining the plate but it won't budge, we even tried running her up a bit but the case just sits there and laughs at us.

So, my question is - Is there any special trick to remove it? or is there anyway to reach the damned starter motor besides removing the WHOLE engine?

The bike is a '98 NSR.

Thanks in advance!

Strange, are you sure you have removed all the bolts? there are two that hold the sprocket cover on that also go through the gen cover but these are fairly easy to spot.

Perhaps tap sharply all the way round with a rubber hammer or the wooden handle of a hammer to break the seal that the gasket provides, because I cannot think of any other reason why it would not come off.

Once you have removed this, there are two bolts and that is pretty much it regarding the removal of the starter motor.

we've tried bashing the whole thing with a hammer, but still it wouldn't budge. Also, we removed a total of 9 bolts.
Seven from the generator coil, and the other two from the chain case.

I just can't think of a way for it to open. Have you ever removed the case? It went out good? is there any other way to the starter motor?

Have removed it about 5 times or so, never had any problems! The bolts that hold the starter motor in can only be accessed when you get the gen cover off.

If you take off the little cap (hex key head) on the gen cover, you may be able to get a better hold on it to pull it off. Hit it, rock it and pull it at the same time!

We even tried to do it that way, but we were unsure if it would be doing any good... We did it with some random weak tool, didn't seem to work. Any advice?

I would just keep at it, the seal will break eventualy, hit the top of it a bit harder with the old rubber mallet Wink

I guess that's the only way out of it... Even though we were bashing the damn thing for 5 hours straight!

Damn that left crankcase cover, if only I could remove it!

Thanks all of you for the advice and schemes! I'll probably give it another try tomorrow... With a hammer...

try to insert a fine screwdriver with a small hammer (hope you have a new gasket) . how many nuts did you take off (apart of the 2 from the front sprocket cover)

I took 7 bolts, I even tried brutalizing the damn thing, pushing it from inside but it still wouldn't even budge.

i gess the last time it was open , it has been fit with pasta avoiding to put a new gasket . i think you must hit it firmly with a piece of wood and a hammer from behind .

Pasta huh? I can see a green substance, looks like plastic, in between the cover and the gen.

i think you must insist otherwise i cannot see how to take it out .
what you can too is to take off the 2 bolts fixing the starter , unplug the little loom up on the bike , they with a piece of wood and a hammer knock it out .

But the problem is, I can't reach the starter motor. And besides, no matter how much I bash it, it justs sits there, idling. It NEVER EVER moved an inch. I think if I were to crash, it still wouldn't budge.

so , the only solution you have is to buy a second hand spare cover and destroy yours , but be carefull to do not destroy the alternator stator . just knock on the border (where it's easier) even if you make an hole in it , afterwards with a lever you will be able to lift it . i have not many alternative ideas

Perhaps you're right. Still - I'd rather try and resfrain from destroying it. I guess the garage will have to use some tools and do their work. Thanks for the help!
