The visors on racing lids are meant to be strong enough to stop a small bullet going through them when fired at. At least the car ones are, not sure about bike ones.
That used to be the test they used to see if they could withstand a stone being flicked at them at around 200mph.
Not sure what calibre gun they used though, can't see it being more than a .22 calibre rifle. Something bigger would probably get a bit messy! ____________________ Colin McRae MBE 1968 - 2007 RIP

Dont buy that lid!
A) Helmets are designed to break down on impact, which takes out some of the force.
B) its pretty obvious the shot has traveled through the helmet anyway, and if you shot a normal helmet at the same range, it wouldnt be a lot different because shot (ball bearings made of lead or steel) will still punch a clean hole, where as a .22, as said above, will mess it up becuase theres a lot more energy in the bullet.
if anyone has an old lid, and a .12 gauge, try it.. it wont be much different.
By looks of the shot pattern id say the range was about 35-40 yards. ____________________ Big Kawasaki ZXR 400 project here:

I don't think this is a relevant test of a lid...........we don't wear them to protect us in the event of being shot in the head by a shotgun at 40yds do we?
The object of a helmet is to proctect your head from impact, and in the case of impact with a pointy object to prevent punturing by the pointy object allowing it to impact your head.
The outer shell is to prvent the puncturing and old it all together, the polystyrene and padding is to absorb the shock. ____________________ Richard

It is interesting, but only in the same way that seeing what the results of shooting anything is interesting.
Like was said, it's a publicity stunt, irrelevant to crash helmet safety really. However, (TC will certainly know) as far as I am aware, visors are tested by having ball bearings fired at them anyway.
The performance of a helmet with realistically modelled head inside is what concerns me more. I've already had my life saved by a helmet once, I'd like to think I stand a decent chance the next time. ____________________ I must not be a troll...

The article says it was shot from 10 yards, but the choke on the shotgun seems to be quite loose thus the largish spread.
Either way still impressive if you think about it. ____________________ The BCF's very own Party boy! Though he's getting old and feeling it!

Let me correct you.
a BRITTISH company built the chicken gun, to test commercial aircrafts windsheild strength. we sold it to the yanks at NASA, and they kept breaking the windows on their aircraft. we told them to defrost the chicken!
