I'd be 'teaching granny to suck eggs' if this was posted anywhere else, but having recently have witnessed 2 near misses by 'L' plated riders, thought I'd actually STBO (State The Bloody Obvious) ...

Whenever you use the 'wrong' side of the road to make progress, whether past a stationary line of traffic or if you've simply seen that the other side of the road is clear enough to pass 'safely' ...

PLEASE BE AWARE of side-roads. The majority of drivers turning left to join a main road from a side road DO NOT LOOK for traffic coming from their left and will ONLY and EXCLUSIVELY look for traffic coming at them from their right AS THEY PULL OUT.

Cheers for the warning. I tend to hoon my way up to the traffic lights in the wrong lane on a numerous amount of occasions. Embarassed

Always leave yourself an escape route if doing this kind of manoeuvre. Plan ahead so if a car does come out of a side road you already know where you have to go to avoid an accident. Best thing to do is not do it at all - but we all do. Just make sure you have planned in your head what to do if faced with an obstacle.

It's not right to go down the other side, next to the kerb, is it? I can't remember ever doing it, but it's always tempted me. I'm generally patient enough to stay in queue, in case I do get mauled by some car coming the other way. It is legal going down the middle of road though, isn't it?
Thumbs Up

You shouldn't go kerbside a this is considered undertaking, and other road users are probably not looking for you on that side and may turn left without much warning.

It's perfectly OK to go on the right hand side if you have enough room without going over the centre line with any part of your bike, but many cars will still not be looking out for you.

Use the 'wrong' lane only if you can see far enough ahead and have an escape route.

Be careful of bikes filtering the other way!

I have a slight variation of this on my way home from work. There is a long steep hill with stacked up traffic which is free flowing in the other direction. If you queued in the traffic it would take you 15minutes to get to the traffic lights at the bottom. I keep it slow enough to stop in case it is tight but can safely squeeze past cars coming the other way. Problem is other bikes as they tend to cut the corners. As we all know you need to tip the bike up and back over to change the line...

Everyone filters down that hill it is just a bit scary to watch a bike changing their direction. I don't think it annoys the other bikers as they tend to still nod at you.

Filterning kerb side is also dangerous if said kerb is covered in shit and/or gravel.

My first near miss filtering slipped on gravel, luckily i missed the hackney and recovered - amid much tire smoke - a first for the cb

Odd thing that. I asked a traffic cop about undertaking when cars are turning right (in the UK).

Apparently if all the cars in the line of traffic are also turning right it's perfectly legal but if just one of them isn't it's illegal Thinking

That's correct Zoffo.

IIRC there are 2 situations where you can undertake. If there's more than one lane of slow moving traffic and the inside lane is moving faster.

And if the person you are undertaking is indicating right i.e into a side road off of the road you are both currently on.
