I've seen these helmets before but I'm sure someone told me they are not legal for road use. I can't seem to find any info if they are road legal or not but I want one!

I posted last week about me dropping my helmet and I've been on the look out for a new lid. Same lid as wore by 'The Stig' on BBC's Top Gear.

If not one of these, then I'm also tempted with the Roof Boxer helmets. Anyone own one of these?

They weren't 'legal' for UK when they were first launched, but that was years ago ... not sure about now.

IIRC it didn't pass the specific tests/ standards for the UK - while it still passed the equivalent US ones - so it's still a safe lid - and I'd use one myself on the road. It's only going to be the twattiest cop that'll pull you and actually look for the approval stickers on a lid ...

but again, that was years ago - don't know what the current situation is ...

Looked at getting one of these a year or so ago. Think i read that they are now gold stamped and absolutely fine for road use.

Best trying to find out for yourself though Smile

absolutely gorgeous helmets though. My alternative at the time was also the Roof Boxer, in bright yellow Razz

For a helmet to be road legal in the UK it MUST carry either the BS stamp or ECE-R 2205 stamps/labels, which means it has passed the required standard.

And from the look of that helmet it looks as if its only passed the Snell Test, the US equivilent standard, which is not as high as the UK/European equivilent.

Its also looks like a Motorsports helmet with the visor being smaller/thinner thefore for use in Cars and not bikes. Thinking

[edit] from the second posted link it seems it may have passed the ECE-R 2205 tests too.[/edit]

How often do the police check what badges are on the back of your helmet? Confused

Here is the European road legal version of the Simpson Super Bandit helmet;

https://www.racevisors.co.uk/index.cfm/view_id/4/details/true/code/H-SIM-SBAN

Price: £300

The European road legal version of the normal Simpson Bandit helmet;

https://www.racevisors.co.uk/index.cfm/view_id/4/details/true/code/H-SIM-BAN

Price: £249.99

It says on their homepage that they meet the European approval - ECE 22.05 ( I found it later on it was governed by the United Nations and this standard came into effect on year 2000.)

Here's a full explanation on that standard!

https://www.bcmducati.com/article.cfm?id=163&type=15

And a comparison of ECE 22.05 and BS 6658 what it means legally in this country;

Its not the police I worry about checking my helmet, I want to know if the helmet is going to protect me in the event of an accident and that its not going to injure me more etc.

They don't put really obvious stamps/badges on the outside, or even the inside anymore. On mine there's a small E3 in a circle with the numbers starting 05 on the chin strap.
From an earlier thread...

The last i heard was they were now legal having been illegal for a long time due to the size of the open area at the front of the helmet.
The price dropped recently and i thought i'd read somewhere that was because it was now legal,being viewed as safety equipment thus exempt from VAT.

The old style ones are still illegal.

There is a newer motorcycle specific one that is now road legal however.

Stunning helmets though. I'll be saving the pennies for one now. Wasn't going to spend as much but I just love the look of them.

Don't want to spoil it for you but try one on first Thumbs Up
One of the helmets I wanted I couldn't have because my head wasn't the right shape for the lid. This is more common than you'd think Rolling Eyes

Just a thought, hope you find it's ok.

Stew has a Craft lid which is a very similar lid to that.

I also hear that the Craft and the Simpson are not too good for sportsbikes because they have open vents on the chinbar that makes them very noisy at speed.

My GF has a Craft helmet. It's very well made. An RX something I'm sure. Very nice all in black. She loves it, and I bet it's not as windy as my FM!!
It's now developed an annoying whistle when I turn my head left thanks to a cracked fin on the top, all my own fault though....

My brother reckons the Roof helmets are very good, so long as you are using in goodish weather. He loved his in summer, but we got caught out in a thunderstorm in france and he had to swap helmets because his kept misting and he couldnt do anything to clear it. Also no visor inserts available AFAIK. Anyone else had similar with roof? They do look nice.

I like the Simpson styled helmets but when I was trying to find one suitable for bikes they were illegal due to the restricted view through the visor (or at least the open area for the visor). As mentioned they have now released a road legal bike version although they are quite expensive.
There are quite a few 'Simpson Bandit' style helmets about, just take a quick skim through streetfighters magazine for the adverts.
I ended up buying a Craft RX7 which is a very similar design (just an update on the RX5). Over time it has become a bit noisy, but is still comfy and looks cool IMO, even if it doesnt quite fit with the usual sportsbike looks.
https://www.designerhelmets.co.uk/product_images/RX7-black-halb-conscan-9x9.jpg
I wanted a shiny black one like that, unfortunately I ended up with a matt black one, which still looks okay with a black visor but not as cool as the darth vader style shiny one. Laughing
