1996 Cbr 600 - Good buy?

Still out looking for bikes, came across a 96 cbr 600, mint condition (little bit of furring on front caliper bolts and top of forks, literally thats it), done 35,700, fsh, datatagged.

It was originally marked at 2,199 but we got him to have 2,250 including restrictor and fitting (dad wants to play legal, and i suppose im less likely to drop it on ice if its not as butch).

Im thinking of saying we want extended warranty (another 80 quid) in with that, or trying to knock him down and add extended warranty.

But do you guys think its a good deal. I couldnt really find anything to knock him down on, and the dealers are right next to us so its very handy. Only one gripe is its exhaust is very dull, but the guy obviously loved the bike. Gone on to a blade now.

So mainly, anyone got one, any good. Looks kind of sports tourer ish (huge comfy seat, centre stand). How does it take restriction? Would you way 2.2k for a 96 one from a dealer?

I thought the light was completly rectangular on anything pre 1998? And that one to me looks a bit more 'V' ish. (like mine)

Yeah looks swish, you could see if you could moan about the exhaust an get a discount on another.

Cant go wrong with CBR's but it does have alot of miles. Long as all the servicing is there and up to date though shouldnt be a problem.

Price sounds about right although i am not exactly an expert. I paid for a low mileage 1999 (with restrictor, DB screen and a few bits an bobs) one £3999. If that helps.

Looks the same as the early 1990s headlight. It was the original shape CBR600 that had the rectangular headlight.

According to Ride's 'used cbr guide'...

Values remain very stable and the condition of the bikes don't deteriorate as quickly as its rivals. Plus this CBR600 was typically avoided by the headbangers in favour of the more frenetic charms of the gsxr600 and zx6r. So you're likely to get a well-looked after machine that'll see you right when you come to sell it again.

The black can is stock, but as there are loads of these bikes out there you'll easily pick up a used aftermarket can on ebay.

I rode Kev's CBR a bit (it was a hodge podge of this model and the one before) and I really liked it. It'll tour when you want it to tour, burble when you want it to burble and go like a scalded cat when you poke it with a pointed stick.

If it's been serviced fine I wouldn't worry about the mileage, though you might want to have a look at the rear shock by this point.

Pegs aren't very high, but it that annoys you just get a jackup kit for about £40 and crack them up a wee bit.

I think you'd enjoy it - they really are all-rounders.

Mileage is very high, so I'd be tempted to go for the warranty. On the other hand CBRs are pretty bulletproof and you can't really go wrong with them.

ive just bought a 93 cbr6 and i cannot fault it really although mine is mint and has done less miles then the 96 your looking at.

overall very nice bike,just wish i could get the seat off,lol

Thanks for all the help guys. The cat just seems abit above my price bracket to be honest. Also i really like the seating position.

Bendy what is the best way to check the rear spring. Sit on it and bounce about seems a tad crude and amateurish (felt enough of a prat being advised how to centerstand it - i dont trust em anyway).

This one is completely completely mint, literally asides from a tad of corrosion on the forks. I mean i couldnt find anything besides that to chip at him about. Also as i say the guys gone onto a blade, which cant be too bad. And its this gorgeous BEFORE valeting, so he obviously cared for it.

My gut feeling is, tomoro (well today i guess), if i can get it for £2250 or < with extended warranty covering parts and labour, and a guarantee that derestricting it will not void the warranty, then all is grand and i think i will have the beast.

Just as a point its from collin collins, and its literally 5 miles from me. So should be a pretty smooth painless transition.

What i will do before agreeing to anything aswell, is get them to start it up from cold now. IF they say its got a flat battery ill get them to put in a new one to show me. I want one that is 100% solid.

It's not bad, and the mileage isn't that high. A 9 year old machine doing on average (and CBR's average more than this to be honest) 4000 miles is 36000 miles. So it's near enough bob on if you're going with official figures for average mileage. In my experience though CBR's cover more like 6000 a year average.

Was written off not long after it was bought brand new, the bloody amateur used to park in his back garden without a cover. One day his garden lamp fell on it and put a big scratch in the frame. wrote it off etc etc now its mine! Suits me down to the ground, good price, reliable, and as i cant afford fully comp on a mint 2000W CBR600 it seemed best to get a cheap one that i could learn with/drop/insure 3rd party. Its a compromise but it suits me down to the ground!!
